There is something to be said for striking the first blow. But at some point, it's a good idea to strike a second.
The Mississinewa Indians made the first basket Friday night, but went scoreless for the rest of the opening quarter as the Class 3A No. 10 Jay County Patriots rolled to a 57-40 victory.
"I just don't think we were prepared for their pressure. And that's hard to simulate in practice ..." said Mississinewa coach Chanse Young. "... I thought their pressure really bothered us to begin with and took us out of what we wanted to do."
Cory Powell scored the opening basket of the game for Mississinewa (6-5), but the Indians missed their final five field-goal tries in the opening quarter. They also turned the ball over eight times.
JCHS coach Craig Teagle credited Luke Goetz, who made his first start of the season, as a big part of his team's defensive success.
"I thought Luke Goetz gave us a spark defensively," Teagle said of the junior guard. "He had three charges. We've been complaining to our kids for four or five games now that somebody has to step up and take a charge. That's a big play in the game. I thought he did a nice job of doing that."
After falling behind 2-0, the Patriots (7-2) ran off 17 points in a row - 15 in the first quarter as well as the first two of the second. Corey Comer scored six of his eight points during the run, and leading scorer Billy Wellman (11.4 points per game) added five.
The Indians, who scored 18 of their 40 points from the free-throw line, went 10 minutes without a field goal before Bryan Babb finally scored on a drive with three minutes to go in the second quarter. They finished the first half just 3-of-16 (19 percent) from the field.
Jay County extended its lead in the second quarter despite no Mississinewa turnovers, pushing ahead by 17 on a four-point play by Wellman and holding that same margin at halftime.
"I think we adjusted a little bit," said Young of the Patriot pressure. "But when you get down like that, especially against a team like Jay County, it's awful tough to come back. I'm proud of our kids in the sense that in the second half they just kept fighting.
"Jay County's a great team. They certainly deserved to win that, and they're going to win a lot more ball games."
The Patriots erased any thought of a Mississinewa comeback by scoring the first 10 points of the second half. Wellman and Rhett Retter each contributed 3-pointers as Jay County pushed the lead to 39-12.
Wellman finished with a game-high 12 points to top another balanced Patriot effort, and also had three assists. Clint Muhlenkamp had 10 points, and Retter matched Comer with eight.
Mississinewa's top rebounder finished with three, while the Patriots had three players with at least twice that many. Muhlenkamp led the effort with nine rebounds, Spencer Hummer had seven and Scott Bruggeman notched six.
"I thought we did a really great job of blocking out sometimes," said Teagle. "A lot of times, I know (Young) ... felt like we were getting into them too hard on the block outs. But when you're 5-10, 5-11, 6-foot, you've got to get a body on someone and keep them away from the basket.
"The real test will be next Friday night because Connersville is very athletic and very big. That's when you've got to get them another foot or two away from the rim or they'll just rebound all over you."
While happy for the most part with the rebounding, Teagle was not thrilled with the sloppy style of play as the Patriots finished with 20 turnovers.
Shane George hit three second-half 3-pointers and led Mississinewa with 11 points and three rebounds. Justin Branock had seven points and a pair of blocked shots.

Jay County overcame an early deficit and dominated the Indians 14-3 in the fourth quarter for a win by a 37-28 score.
After falling behind 13-4, the Patriots pulled to within a single point late in the first half. Their deficit grew again, but they rallied to tied the game at 25 on a hoop by Adam Garringer and scored the game's final 12 points.
Dexter Shreve scored eight of his game-high 18 points for Jay County in the fourth quarter. Garringer finished with 10 points.
Mississinewa was led by Kyle Barsha's 13 points. Chris Birky added 12.[[In-content Ad]]
