Pair of wins keeps FR third (01/25/07)

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After back-to-back losses, the Indians got back on track with a couple of wins and held its spot in the state girls basketball poll.

Fort Recovery topped St. Henry Dec. 18 and Arcanum Saturday to improve to 13-2 and remain No. 3 in the Division IV poll by The Associated Press this week.

The Tribe, which opened at No. 1 two weeks ago before falling to third after its loss to New Knoxville, finished with 192 points and one first-place vote. Columbus Africentric (14-1) remained No. 1 with 246 points and 20 first-place votes, Hopewell-Loudon (14-0) stayed second with 232 points and Berlin Hiland (10-3) trailed the Indians in fourth with 173.

Fort Recovery plays just once this week as it will visit Marion Local today. The current Indian seniors have never beaten the Flyers in five tries (three regular season, two tournament), including the district championship game last season.

Homan lifts JC freshmen

HUNTINGTON - Eric Homan's three-point play in the final minute pushed the Jay County freshman boys basketball team to a 30-29 victory Wednesday over the Huntington North Vikings.

The Patriots (11-4) trailed 29-27, but Homan scored with 30.4 seconds on the clock. He was also fouled on the play, and made the ensuing free-throw for Jay County's winning margin.

Homan scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter. Brad Horn was second on the team with five points.

EJ girls win big

The East Jay Middle School girls basketball teams rolled over Hartford City Tuesday, the eighth graders with a 30-19 win and the seventh grade team by a 37-4 final.

Danielle Link paced the eighth grade team (10-3) with nine points. Logan Laux followed with six, and Abby Denney and Brittany Manor each added four.

Mariah Horniday led a balanced seventh grade effort with eight points. LeAnn Horn was right behind her with seven, and Whitni Somers and Maria Murphy each scored six.

The seventh grade team (11-1) also won the East Jay tournament Saturday with wins over Winchester, 30-29, and Monroe Central, 30-16. The eighth graders were tournament runners up as they beat Monroe Central 23-22, but fell 34-25 to Yorktown.[[In-content Ad]]
