Patriot bats explode in victory over Southside (04/16/04)

Jay County Roundup

Stephanie Imel’s bat has been on fire all season. The flames spread to a few more Thursday.

Imel was one of four Patriots with at least three hits as the Jay County softball team scored a 16-10 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

Jay County (2-4, 1-2 Olympic Athletic Conference) trailed 4-1 after the first inning, but took the lead for good with a mammoth second.

It went wacky with singles to start the inning, with Katie Alberson and Ashleigh Myers getting base hits. After Chelsea DeBoy was hit by a pitch Danielle Jackson and Erica Murray added two more singles to bring in a couple of runs.

Saffron Redwine walked, and Jenni Chittum smashed a double before Imel and Amber Champ added two more singles. Then it was another single for Alberson, and doubles by Myers and Murray before the Rebels finally put together enough outs to escape the inning.

In all the Patriots scored 11 runs — two each by Alberson, Myers and Jackson — and racked up 10 hits while sending 15 batters to the plate.

Muncie Southside scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the second inning, but never recovered from the 12-4 deficit.

Jay County blasted 20 hits in all including a 4-for-4 effort from Murray, who was hitless in her only two previous at-bats this year. She had two doubles, drove in three runs and scored twice.

Imel, who is now hitting .524 on the season, finished 3-for-5 with a double that hit about halfway up the fence as she just missed her first home run of the year. She drove in four runs and scored once.

Alberson added three hits, two runs and two stolen bases, and Chittum had three hits and two runs. Jackson scored three times, and Redwine and Myers each crossed the plate twice.

Myers also earned her second win of the season, going the distance and allowing 10 runs on 12 hits. She walked four and struck out two.

Jay County will look for its first back-to-back wins of the season when it visits the Richmond Red Devils for a double-header Saturday at 11 a.m.

Pats set records

Neither of Jay County’s track teams won as they hosted a triangular meet Thursday, but the girls did manage to break a couple of records in the process.

Alyssa Johnson broke one record on her own and led a relay team to another as the Patriot girls scored 47 points. They just outdistanced the Yorktown Tigers’ 44 points, while the Delta Eagles won the meet with 65.

Delta won the boys’ competition with 62 points, and Yorktown was second with 51. Jay County placed third with 43 points.

Johnson led the Patriots to a record run in the 4x800-meter relay. She and teammates Nicole VanSkyock, Jessica Mosier and Jill Roughia teamed for a new school record of 10-minutes, 25.7 seconds.

Johnson, a sophomore, also set a new school mark in the 3,200-meter run. She won that race in 11:38.

Nicole Pfeifer had the only other victory for the Patriot girls on the evening. The freshman came away with a win in the long jump at a distance of 13 feet, 111/2 inches.

Paul Imel was the star for the boys team, winning a trio of individual events for the second time this season.

The senior sprinted his way to three victories, winning his first in the 100-meter dash in 10.89. He won the 200-meter dash in 23.23, and took the 400-meter dash in 51.45.

David Stith led a one-two finish for Jay County in the shot put, taking first at 50 feet, one inch. Joseph Vormohr placed second at 42 feet, two inches.

The only other triumph for the Patriots came from Lucas McBride with a 20-foot leap in the long jump.

Jay County will host another triangular meet Monday against Mississinewa and Fort Recovery at 5 p.m.

Jay slips again

Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers came up with a comeback victory, but it was the only win for Jay County as the tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Bluffton Tigers.

Sours and St. Myers, playing No. 1 doubles, had their problems early as they lost the first set to Christina Yoder and Claire Peterson 6-3. However, they picked up the momentum by winning the second set in a 7-1 tiebreaker.

They went on to take the 21/2-hour marathon match 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. It was the second straight match in which Sours and St. Myers scored the lone victory for Jay County (1-3).

The Patriots’ No. 2 doubles pair also went to three sets, but wasn’t able to pull off a win. Erin Schmiesing and Chelsea Reff dropped by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 final to Julie Coratti and Tess Crickard.

The singles matches were not as close, as no Jay County player took more than three games.

Whitney Schemenaur fell 6-2, 6-1 to Mallory King at No. 1 singles, and No. 2 singles player Stephanie Homan lost by a 6-1, 6-1 score against Audrey Ballinger. Angie Stults couldn’t handle Danielle Beisel at No. 3 singles in a 6-1, 6-0 loss.

The Patriots’ next match begins Olympic Athletic Conference play as they visit Muncie Southside Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

In Thursday’s junior varsity action Jay County turned the tables for a 4-1 win over Bluffton.

The doubles teams scored a pair of shutouts, with Janae Horn and Brianne Morrical combining for an 8-0 win over Ashlie Hall and Caitlin Williams at the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 doubles Amanda Hicks and Shonda Sutton rolled over Hall and Wiliams by the same score.

Lauren Budde was nearly as good in an 8-1 victory over Krystle Green at No. 3 singles.

Carissa Wilkins squeaked out a win at No. 1 singles or the fourth Patriot win, knocking off Megan Harvey 8-7 (7-4).

Annika Kuitzsch lost her No. 2 singles match to Megan Harney 8-4.[[In-content Ad]]
