Patriot boys fall at Norwell

OSSIAN — Tied through 40 minutes, the Jay County High School boys soccer team couldn’t keep up in the second half Thursday in a 4-2 loss to the host Norwell Knights.
The game was tied at 1-1 at halftime, but Norwell scored four minutes into the second half to take the lead for good. The Knights put the ball in the net again with 20 minutes remaining for a 3-1 lead, and tallied their final goal three minutes later.
Aldo Castro scored the first-half goal for the Patriots, who dropped to 1-2-3 with the defeat. Alex Abbott got control of a loose ball in the box and scored from 10 yards out with nine minutes remaining in the game.
Austin Cowan finished with five saves for Jay County.

Raiders top spikers
SELMA — The visiting Patriot volleyball team struggled against the Class 2A No. 2 Wapahani Raiders, falling 25-13, 25-16, 25-15.
Mariah Hornaday totaled seven kills, three points, two digs and two blocks for Jay County, which slipped to 6-5. Hannah Ainsworth put up 10 assists, Malarie Houck scored seven points and Alyssa Rigby came up with five digs.
In the junior varsity match, Rachel Ferguson scored six points in a 25-14, 25-14 loss.
On Tuesday, Jay County rolled to a 25-15, 25-21, 25-20 victory over the host Fort Wayne South Side Archers. Rigby powered the win behind the service line, finishing with 31 points and nine aces.
Courtney Finnerty had 14 points in the junior varsity squad’s 25-15, 25-2 win.

Eagle seventh wins
BERNE — West Jay Middle School’s seventh grade volleyball team defeated the host South Adams Starfires 25-24, 16-25, 15-10. The eighth graders lost 25-16, 25-23.
Kaity Grady tallied seven points to pace the win for the seventh graders, and Lily Rogers had a pair of kills. Courtney Cox had five points and two aces.
Mekayla Nichols notched seven points and two aces for the eighth grade Eagles. Emily Jobe scored six points.

WJ football falls
DUNKIRK — The West Jay football teams each managed one touchdown in losses to visiting Winchester Driver. The seventh graders fell 14-6, and the eighth grade team suffered a 26-6 defeat.
Joey Springer got in the end zone for the eighth grade Eagles on a 35-yard pass from Daniel Meranda. Drew Huffman had a fumble recovery.
Jacob Geesaman scored on a 12-yard turn for the seventh grade team.[[In-content Ad]]
