Patriot boys top Braves (01/04/08)

JCHS swimming

DECATUR - Jay County High School's boys swim team cruised Thursday, winning every event in a 125-59 victory over the Bellmont Braves. The girls team needed a victory in the final relay, but fell short in a 93-92 loss to the Squaws.

Aaron Hudson, Tom McCord and Sam Miller also picked up a pair of individual wins for the boys team, while Michelle Landfair and Cori Vormohr earned four of the girls team's five individual wins.

McCord led the lone sweep of the night as the JCHS boys (5-2) dominated the 200-yard individual medley. The senior won easily in 2-minutes, 13.5 seconds, followed by freshman Neal Fennig (2:28.86) and junior Nathan Cain (2:33.86).

The other victory from McCord came in the 100 butterfly at 59.91 with teammate Chance Milligan second.

Hudson and Milligan combined for a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle, with Hudson reaching the wall in 2:04.04. He also took the top spot with a time of 55.76 in the 100 freestyle.

Miller was in control of both of his events, starting with his win in 23 seconds flat in the 50 freestyle. He took the 100 backstroke by just over 10 seconds in 1:00.32.

While the boys dominated, the girls meet came down to a winner-take-all final event. Bellmont took the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay by nearly three seconds.

Landfair's first race ended in a rare tie as both she and Bellmont senior Lauren McConnell touched the wall in 27.99. She went on to a victory by more than six seconds in 1:01.89 in the 100 freestyle.

Vormohr won the 200 individual medley by more than 10 seconds, finishing in 2:22.86. Her other victory came in 1:06.51 in the 100 backstroke.

After following McCord and Fennig in the 200 individual medley sweep, Cain led a one-two finish for the Patriot boys in the 500 freestyle. He posted a winning time of 5:48.165, and Fennig took second place.

Lance VanSkyock finished first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.58, and Donny McCowan picked up the diving win by less than a point over Bellmont senior Zach Lee with a score of 179.5.

Hudson, Milligan and McCord joined VanSkyock to take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:43.28 and teamed with Miller for first in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:39.68. Miller, VanSkyock, Fennig and Cody Bullard finished the 200 medley relay in 1:55.73 for first place.

Elaine Hemmelgarn added the only other individual win for the JCHS girls team (4-5-1). The freshman posted a career-best time of 1:23.79 to take the 100 breaststroke by nearly two seconds.

Landfair, Hemmelgarn, Ivy Simons and Maddie Fennig won the 200 medley relay in 2:16.40.[[In-content Ad]]
