Patriot boys win, girls tie Starfires (09/13/04)

PORTLAND — Jay County’s boys soccer team scored its second straight win Saturday to jump above .500, topping South Adams in the first part of a triple-header 4-1. The Patriot and Starfires girls battled to a 0-0 tie.
There was also a junior varsity boys game, which Jay County won by a 3-2 score.
South Adams jumped out to a quick lead against the Patriots in the boys game, scoring just 3:33 into the contest. Darius Martens got the score on a corner kick from Spencer Haworth for the 1-0 Starfire lead.
But, they went scoreless for the next 76-plus minutes, and Jay County had plenty left.
The Patriots tied the game less than two minutes later on a goal by Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman. Trent Bailey put them on top for good with just 10:47 gone in the first half, scoring from 15 yards out on an assist from Sergio Woo.
Jay County (5-4) took the 2-1 lead to halftime, then got goals from Chad Keen and Bailey in the final nine minutes of the contest for the final margin.
Keen took six of the Patriots’ 16 shots on goal, while Bailey finished with five. The Starfires managed just seven shots on goal in the contest.
Goalie Derek Mills came up with six saves for Jay County.
South Adams turned the tables on the Patriots in the girls game, outshooting them 14-5. However, neither team could get the ball in the net.
Freshman goalie Abby Loy rejected all of the Starfires’ scoring tries. They took eight shots on goal in the first half and six in the second.
Renae Laux had the lone shot on goal for the Patriots in the first half. She added another in the second half, and Jamie Bruggeman had three shots in the second half.
Jay County’s girls are 2-3-1 on the season and will visit Delta Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The Patriot boys play at Bellmont Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The Jay County junior varsity boys evened their record at 2-2-1 with the victory over South Adams. They scored twice in the first half and once in the second.
