Patriot cheerleaders advance to state finals (11/01/04)

FORTVILLE — Jay County’s cheerleaders continued their success Saturday with a third-place finish at the Indiana Cheer Association East Regional competition at Mount Vernon High School.

Jay County scored 290 points, finishing just behind the host Marauders (299) in Class 3A. Pendleton Heights took the 3A regional title with a score of 318.

The top three teams all advance to Saturday’s ICA State Championships at New Castle High School.

The Patriots also had competitors in the partner stunt and individual divisions for the first time in several years, but did not advance.

The group of Heather Stevens, Hannah Williams, Holly Taylor and Brandyn Monroe scored 142 points in the partner stunt competition. Pendleton Heights was first with 174 points, one point ahead of second-place Lawrence North.

Lacey Grider and Melissa Fifer each competed as individuals, scoring 121 and 114 points respectively. Indianapolis North Central’s Keisha Mitchel was first with 174 points.

Other team championships went to Monroe Central in Class 1A, Winchester in 2A and Hamilton Southeastern in 4A.

Huelskamp caps season

TROY, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s Derrick Huelskamp ended his senior season of cross country Saturday as he finished 43rd at the Division III regional meet at Troy.

Huelskamp crossed the finish line in 18:37, one second behind Trevor Moore of Arcanum. Sam Borchers of Yellow Springs was the champion with a time of 16:55.

Hummel leads Jay

MUNCIE — Levi Hummel picked up his team’s lone victory and finished in the top four in each of his five races as the Jay County Winter Swim Team finished second at the five-team Ball State Invitational Sunday.

Hummel earned the only Jay County victory in the 8-and-younger boys 25-meter breaststroke with a time of 31.27 seconds.

He added second-place finishes in the 25-meter butterfly and the 100-meter individual medley in 26.39 and 2-minutes, 6.62 seconds respectively.

He was also third in the 25-meter backstroke and fourth in the 25-meter freestyle as he racked up four personal-best times at the meet.

Jay County had two more third-place efforts in the 8-and-younger division. Rylee Clemmons was third in the girls 25-yard breaststroke in 26.18, and Sok Vormohr took third in the boys 25-meter breaststroke in 43.29.

Cori Vormohr also finished third in the senior girls 100-meter freestyle in 58.76. She was fourth in each of her other four races.

Clemmons was also on a pair of second-place relay teams. She joined Annie Vormohr, Sophie Bader and Lydia Beymer to take the 100-meter medley relay and teamed with Vormohr, Bader and Ellie Kaverman to win the 100-meter freestyle relay.

Kaverman, Alex Bader, Brette Klopp and Ashton Klopp teamed to take third in the 100-meter medley relay.

Also coming up with individual finishes in the top six were Sophie Bader, Caleb Hummel, Mitchell Kaverman, Michaela Long, Danny Mart, Annie Vormohr, Adam Young and Wiley Young.

Taylor takes first

FORT WAYNE — Megan Taylor took the all-around title as the Gym City Gliders competitive gymnastics team competed in Fort Wayne this weekend.

Taylor was first in the all-around in her age group, with first-place finishes in both the floor exercise and the vault. She was second on the balance beam and fourth on the uneven parallel bars.

Other top-three finishes came from Lauren Runkle, who was second on the floor exercise, and Shelby Pryor, who placed third on the vault.

Football combine

Hoosier Gridiron will hold a football combine in December at Anderson University for high school players interested in continuing their careers at the collegiate level.

Athletes will be evaluated for strength, speed and agility, and there will be special “positional demonstration sessions.” There will also be a speaker who will discus the NCAA Clearinghouse, financial aid, NCAA recruiting rules and college admissions.
