JCHS cross country
ANDERSON — Jay County’s girls cross country team won its third straight conference title Thursday. And this time, no one else was close.
Patriot senior Alyssa Johnson reclaimed the individual Olympic Athletic Conference championship at Mounds State Park in Anderson to lead her team to the crown as it scored 24 points.
Anderson Highland, which was the runner-up last season by just 11 points, finished a distant second with 57 followed by Connersville (68) and Muncie Southside (69).
Jay County’s boys were last among the four conference teams with 104 points. Southside was first with 28 followed by Highland (41) and Connersville (59).
Johnson, who won the OAC race in 2003 but finished second last year, was only challenged by her sister.
Alyssa Johnson proved to be the best runner in the conference, winning with a time of 16-minutes, 47 seconds. The only runner close to her was sophomore Amanda Johnson, who followed up last year’s fourth-place finish by taking second in 16:54. She was 25 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.
Only Tori Adams of Highland was able to break Jay County’s stronghold on the top five as she took third place. Two more Patriots followed with freshman Kylie Wellman fourth in 17:34 and junior Jessica Mosier fifth in 17:42.
Kelly Weaver completed the team score in 12th place with a time of 19:20.
The Patriot boys struggled as the top five Southside and Highland runners were across the finish line before Josh Hawn got there to lead Jay County. Hawn was 18th overall in 19:56.
The rest of the Patriots finished in a pack with Josh Selvey 20th in 20:02, Brady Mills 21st with a time of 20:03, Cory Mock 22nd in 20:05 and Travis Towell capping the team score in 23rd at 20:12.
Other runners for Jay County were: Cassie Laux (13th - 19:23) for the girls and Josh Atkinson (27th - 20:22) and Steven Kelly (28th - 21:09) for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
