Patriot girls win invite (12/22/2008)

JCHS Swimming

CONNERSVILLE - A lack of diving points didn't seem to hurt the Patriots.

Jay County High School swim teams did not compete in Friday's diving portion of the Connersville Invitational because school was canceled. But the swimmers took care of business Saturday as the Patriot girls team took the title and the boys finished as runners-up.

The JCHS boys scored 261 points, finishing behind the host Spartans (261). Centerville (246) was third in the seven-team field.

Girls scores were not available at press time.

Cori Vormohr was the lonely Patriot to win two events, which included another impressive performance by the team in the 100 breaststroke. Trailing prior to the event, Jay County rallied to the lead with Vormohr winning in 1-minute, 10.76 seconds - she was just one tenth of a second ahead of Connersville's Kirsten Luehr - Mary Hudson in second place and Elaine Hemmelgarn in third.

JCHS then locked up the team championship with a four-second win in the 400 freestyle relay.

The other win for Vormohr came in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.44.

Michelle Landfair took first place in the 100 freestyle at 1:03.19, and also finished fourth in the 50 freestyle at 28.43.

Vormohr, Landfair and Hudson joined Eme Miller to take second in the 200 medley relay in 2:02.01, and teamed with Marissa Murrell for a runner-up time of 1:53.67 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Sam Miller and Aaron Hudson led the boys team with their dominant effort in the 200 individual medley. They finished first and second respectively with times of 2:08.96 and 2:13.95.

Hudson won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.32, and Miller was second in the 100 butterfly at 54.67.

Neal Fennig earned the only other win for the Patriots in the 50 freestyle. He added a third-place finish at 1:02.62 in the 100 backstroke.

Miller, Hudson, Fennig and Derik Lucas placed second in the 200 medley relay at 1:47.64. Fennig and Miller also joined Chance Milligan and Wiley Young to take second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:41.13.

Mary Hudson added a runner-up effort in the 200 individual medley at 2:31 flat. Eme Miller was third in 6:17.86 in the 500 freestyle.

Derik Lucas was third for the boys team in the 50 freestyle. He also joined Hudson, Milligan and Lance VanSkyock for a third-place time of 1:41.46 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Leading swimmers for the Jay County girls in other events were Aly Miller (fourth - 100 backstroke) and Briann Saxman (fifth - 200 freestyle). Top finishes for the JCHS boys in other events came from Nathan Cain (fourth - 500 freestyle) and Chance Milligan (fifth - 100 and 200 freestyle).
