Patriot girls wrap up conference crown (09/24/07)

Soccer roundup

MUNCIE - The Patriots are champions again.

Jay County High School's girls soccer team locked up back-to-back Olympic Athletic Conference championships Saturday with a 5-0 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels. The Patriots (5-6) rolled to their 3-0 conference record by a combined score of 19-3, also getting victories of 9-2 over Connersville and 5-1 against Anderson Highland.

The clinching victory came in record fashion as goalie Abby Loy broke the school mark for shutouts in a career. The blanking of the Rebels was the 11th shutout of her career, surpassing the record of 10.5 set by 2003 graduate Liz Burke.

Meagan Logue gave Loy the only goal she would need less than nine minutes into the game. Then, at the 22:35 mark, Dana Horn found Tricia Skiver on a corner kick for a 2-0 Patriot lead, and a minute later Horn took the ball down the right side for a goal of her own.

Brianne Wellman added the final tally of the first half, and scored the only goal of the second for the final margin.

Loy saved the only Southside shot of the game for the shutout.

Star girls lose heart-breaker

With a 3-0 Allen County Athletic Conference record going into Saturday's tournament, South Adams had to be considered the favorite. But penalty kicks were not kind to them.

After a 1-1 tie in regulation, two scoreless 7-minute halves of overtime and an even five-on-five shootout, the Starfire girls soccer team came up short in sudden death penalty kicks to fall to the Leo Lions. South Adams bounced back to win the consolation game 2-0 over the Heritage Patriots.

Leo took the lead midway through the first half, only to have the Starfires (10-3) tie the game in a hurry. Just four minutes after the Lions got on the board, Maddie Moore hit a corner kick and Kinsey Lengerich put it home for the tie.

The score remained deadlocked until Leo won in the sudden-death shootout.

Ashton Morgan, the South Adams scoring leader, tallied her 19th and 20th goals in the victory over Heritage.

SA boys fall in final

South Adam's boys team won its opening game Saturday to make the Allen County Athletic Conference championship game before falling 4-0 to Leo. The Starfires victory over Heritage in the semifinal round came by the same score.

McLaughlin led South Adams (7-4-2) in the win over Heritage with a pair of goals.
