Patriot golfers earn split (09/17/03)

Jay County Roundup

Jay County’s top scores weren’t quite as low as a day earlier, but the girls golf team still came away with a split against the Blackford Bruins and the Southern Wells Raiders Tuesday.

The Patriots finished with a 226, good for second at the meet behind the Raiders’ 205. Blackford shot a 286.

A day after scoring a personal-best at the Olympic Athletic Conference meet Brianne Morrical again led Jay County. She matched teammate Deanna Drinkut for a team-low score of 56.

Morrical had one of her two bogeys on the Patriots’ favorite hole, the par-3 third. Jay County scored three bogeys and a pair of pars on the third.

She also added a bogey on the par-3 sixth hole. Drinkut bogeyed the third and the par-4 fifth.

Cara Geesaman and Shonda Sutton were right behind them, each shooting 57s. Katey Kohler finished with a 58.

Geesaman, Sutton and Kohler each scored one par in their rounds.

The Patriots now head to tournament play Saturday for the sectional tournament at Parlor City Golf Club in Bluffton at 9:30 a.m.

Late rally stuns Jay

For 70 minutes the Jay County girls soccer team had the win in their grasp. In the final 10, the Delta Eagles swooped in and clawed it away.

Delta scored twice in the final 9:35 to surge past the Patriots and hand them a 2-1 loss Tuesday.

Jay County (3-3-1) had a 1-0 lead thanks to a Sarah Miller first-half goal before the Eagles’ finally made their multitude of shots pay off.

Kendra Ridge scored first with 9:35 on the clock, and Patricia Gorenc chipped in the game-winning with just under four minutes left. Delta took 28 shots on goal in the contest, compared to just seven for the Patriots.

Jessica Heitkamp took three shots for Jay County, and Sarah Miller notched a pair. Sara Garringer recorded 16 saves.

The Patriots play again today at Bellmont at 6:30 p.m.

JC boys fall short

The Vikings did it to Jay County again.

Huntington North was responsible for the long blemish on the Patriots’ Olympic Athletic Conference record a year ago. It denied them an OAC title once again Tuesday as the Vikings topped Jay County 3-2.

Eduardo Nieto and Trent Bailey each scored goals for the Patriots, but it was not enough as their seven-game winning streak came to an end. Bailey also had seven saves, and Derek Mills had one.

Jay County will be back in action today at home against Bellmont at 4:30 p.m.
