Patriot golfers fall short vs. Delta

EATON - The second-best score of the season was not quite enough.

Jay County High School's girls golf team had two sub-45 rounds, but suffered a 177-190 loss to the Delta Eagles.

The Patriots (7-4) got three pars apiece from Abby Denney and Macey Gerber, both of whom played even on the par-4 fifth hole. Denney added pars on the first and fourth holes and had five bogeys to lead the team with a 42 at Lakeview Country Club.

Mackenzie Clawson of Delta earned medalist honors with a 41, while two other Eagles broke the 45 mark.

Gerber, who shot in the 50s in every round last season, had her second and third pars on the sixth and ninth holes. She also turned in four bogeys for a career-best round of 44.

Cara Garringer recorded five bogeys for a 49, and Brittany Stevens parred the second hole on the way to a 55.

Tigers blank netters

BLUFFTON - The Patriot boys tennis team dropped to 2-6 on the season with a 5-0 loss Thursday to the Bluffton Tigers.

Jared Valentine played a solid match for JCHS at No. 1 singles, but fell just short of forcing a second-set tiebreaker in a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Cameron Gerber. At No. 2 singles Brad Luethold fell 6-1, 6-2 to Nick Huffman, and in the No. 3 singles match Joe Imel lost 6-2, 6-0 against Damon Kuhlenbeck.

Chance Fuller and Jordan McBride dropped the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, 6-2 to Cody Cochran and Bryan Bowman. Seth Ainsworth and Austin Cowan lost by a 6-3, 6-3 score to Michael Vanderkolk and Chandler Okey at No. 2 doubles.

Jay County's junior varsity team lost 5-4. Tylor Smith and Derek Smith each won 8-1 in singles action and teamed for an 8-1 doubles victory. Landry Inman added an 8-6 win at No. 4 singles.

OH blanks girls soccer

CONVERSE - Jay County's girls soccer team held strong in the first half before fading to a 4-0 loss to the host Oak Hill Golden Eagles.

The Patriots played most of the game on their defensive half of the field, but stood strong for a scoreless tie at the half. Mollie May finished the game with seven saves, and LeAnn Horn added three.

Oak Hill, which was undefeated in the 2007 regular season and finished as sectional-runner-up last year, pulled away with four scores in the second half.

Andrea Bruggeman recorded the lone shot on goal for JCHS, which dropped to 2-3 on the year.

Volleyball loses to MC

PARKER CITY - The Patriot volleyball team won its opening game Thursday only to drop each of the next three in a 16-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 loss to the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.

Ashley Langenkamp had 13 assists and 11 points for Jay County, which is now 1-11 on the year. Maria Murphy added seven kills, six points and two blocks.

Laura Castillo had seven kills, and Danielle Wellman followed with six. Sierra Weatherhead notched a team-high 17 digs, and Lacey Randolph added 13 digs.

Hannah Ainsworth totaled 13 points, seven assists and seven digs to lead the JCHS junior varsity team to a 25-12, 25-23 victory. Alyssa Rigby added 10 digs and nine points, and Whitni Somers had five kills.

Trojans top EJ

The East Jay Middle School football teams each fell Thursday, the seventh graders by an 8-6 score to the New Castle Trojans and the eighth grade team 16-8.

New Castle scored on its opening drive in the seventh grade game, and Andrew McShane had the lone TD for the Chiefs with a 25-yard interception return. Dusty Wycuff had 41 rushing yards on six carries.

Ryan Tinkham had a TD run and 83 total rushing yards to pace the EJMS eighth graders. Preston Keen added the 2-point conversion, and Brent Lewis led the defense with eight tackles.

Jay wins invite

CONVERSE - Aly Miller led the cross country team to victory Tuesday at the Oak Hill Invitational.

Jay County scored 57 points to finish 13 in front of runner-up Eastern in the 12-team field. The boys team does not have enough runners for a team score.

Miller set the pace for the Patriot girls with a time of 21 minutes, 53 seconds. She was just five seconds out of the top five.

Bethany Neeley, a freshman, took the top spot for Eastern in 20:37.

Leah Wellman and Katie Simmons went back-to-back in ninth and 10th with times of 22:08 and 22:12 respectively. Kari Hemmelgarn was 15th in 22:50, and Logan Laux finished 17th in 22:58.

Tevan Nichols finished in 18:02 for seventh place to lead the JCHS boys. Dylan Cope was 36th in 19:51 ahead of Kyle Scott (83rd - 23:40) and Zach Johnson (92nd - 25:08).

Other runners for the Patriot girls were Megan Taylor (28th - 23:49) and Liz Lennartz (41st - 25:13).[[In-content Ad]]
