Hess (145) finished with a 5-2 record, picking up four twins on technical falls as he qualified to wrestle for Team Indiana. His losses came against the tournament champion and runner-up.

Robert Ralston finished at 1-2.

Thunderbirds win two

The Jay County Thunderbirds under-14 soccer team picked up a pair of wins this weekend, topping New Castle Saturday 2-1 and Connersville Sunday 11-0.

Brad Horn punched in the winning goal for the Thunderbirds against New Castle with just two minutes to play. Also scoring for Jay County was Patrick Johnson.

Horn had a mammoth game in the blowout of Connersville, scoring a hat trick and adding four assists. Each scoring one goal apiece for the Thunderbirds (4-1) in that contest were Chase Ainsworth, Colton Bartlett, Ben Brandt, Tequila Guntle, Patrick Johnson, Justen Moser, Richard Osterholt and Lucas Schmiesing.

Moser and Aaron McLaughlin each added a pair of assists.

Byrge tied for lead

Byrge, a Dunkirk resident, finished first in his heat this weekend at the Twin Cities Raceway in North Vernon. He was also leading the feature race when it was stopped because of rain.

Vikings blast Jay

Jay County scored a lot and not at all in a pair of losses to the Huntington North Vikings Friday night.

The Patriots couldn’t touch the Huntington North pitching the first game, notching just two hits in a 4-0 defeat. They posted nine runs in the second game, but still fell well short in a 16-9 loss.

Mike Smith took the loss in game one, allowing four runs — one earned — on eight hits. He struck out two and walked two.

Heath Williams and Josh Shatto had the only two hits in the contest.

Jay County trailed 5-2 after three innings in the second game, but scored six times in the final three frames. However, Huntington North posted 11 runs in the final three innings — five in the seventh — to take the win.

Shatto went deep for his first career home run, and also had a double. Williams finished 2-for-3 with three runs and three stolen bases.

Smith joined Shatto at 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run and five steals. Keen added a pair of hits, a run and a stolen base.

Josh Atkinson took the loss, although he did not allow an earned run. He gave up three unearned runs on one hit in 12/3 innings of relief.

Keen started and allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 41/3 innings. Trent Bailey gave up five runs on three hits in one inning.

The Patriots will host Union City Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Turkeys released

The Department of Natural Resources is asking for help from local residents and hunters.

The DNR recently trapped 156 wild turkeys in Martin County, which have since been released locally to try to establish self-sustaining wild turkey flocks. With turkey season running until May 9, the DNR is asking hunters to refrain from hunting turkeys to help in the effort to rebuild the turkey population.

Wild turkeys have been released in Jay Blackford, Delaware, Adams, Randolph, Wells and other surrounding counties.[[In-content Ad]]
