Patriot golfers improve on back (08/03/04)

The Jay County girls golf team simply has to hope to keep up the trend it started Monday.
The Patriots opened the 2004 season at the Richmond Invitational, finishing with a team score of 451. More importantly, each of the four varsity scorers improved — by a total of 19 strokes — on the back nine.
Complete team scores were not available at press time.
Trisha Champ posted the low score for Jay County. She notched three bogeys on the front nine and three more on the back for a 104.
Miranda Denney matched Champ for a team-high six bogeys as she finished with a 113. Katie Kohler had the lone par of the day for the team on the 340-yard, par-4 10th hole on the way to a 116.
Shonda Sutton rounded out the team scoring with a 118, and Alissa McMillan had a 139.
Jay County is back in action today at the Monroe Central Invitational.
Golfers advance
A pair of Jay County teams qualified for the Special Olympics State Golf Tournament as they competed in the regional tournament in Kokomo recently.
Ron Smith and Larry Smith finished second to earn their trip to the state meet, and Roseanne Knipp and Cindy Denney advanced with a third place finish.
The top four teams earned state berths.
Kristy Silverman and Sara Smith placed sixth.
Bowling meeting
The Portland Women’s Bowling Association will hold its fall meeting at the Brown Bowl today at 6 p.m. All members of the association are welcome to attend.
