Patriot golfers score first victory at Grey Goose (09/02/04)

DECATUR — A night after missing their first victory by just three strokes, the Jay County girls golf team picked up a pair of wins over the Bellmont Squaws and the Monroe Central Golden Bears Wednesday.

Trisha Champ posted her first birdie in competition, scoring a 44 to lead the Patriots to a team score of 216 at Grey Goose Golf Club in Decatur. Monroe Central was second at 220, and Bellmont finished a close third at 222.

Champ, a freshman, got her first birdie on the second-to-last hole, the 271-yard, par-4 eighth. She also had a par on the 106-yard, par-3 sixth hole and birdies on numbers one, three, seven and nine to take match medalist honors by one stroke.

Champ was trailed by senior Brianne Morrical, who shot a 54 with bogeys on the third and eighth holes. Katey Kohler picked up her third par in two days on the 266-yard, par-4 seventh on the way to a 59, and Shonda Sutton also shot a 59.

Alissa McMillan finished with a 60.

Jay County will host Yorktown and Wes-Del Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Patriot girls fall

OSSIAN — The Jay County girls soccer team slipped to 1-3 on the season with a 4-3 defeat to the Norwell Knights Wednesday.

Jay County trailed 1-0 early, but got goals from Jamie Bruggeman and Abby Schmiesing to post a 2-1 halftime lead. Norwell pulled even about a minute after the intermission on an Aimee Buckland goal, and climbed ahead on Janelle Meyer’s second score at the 29:36 mark.

Bruggeman tied the game on an assist from Sara Garringer with 17:20 to play, but the Knights took the lead for good when Buckland scored again with 15:05 left.

Norwell took 13 shots on goal, 10 in the second half. Jay County finished the contest with 10 shots on goal.

The Patriots also lost in junior varsity action to Norwell, 1-0.

The game went scoreless for the first 45 minutes before Nickole Rehling of the Knights recorded the lone goal. Norwell took 19 shots on goal compared to just three for Jay County.

Cassandra Huelskamp took a pair of shots, both in the second half, and Tequila Guntle had one.

The Patriots will visit Anderson Highland Saturday at 10 a.m.

Jay JV boys top Delta

PORTLAND — The Jay County junior varsity boys soccer team (1-1) couldn’t put the ball in the net in the first half, but scored three times in the second to top the Delta Eagles 3-0.

Dustin Fox opened the scoring 6:30 into the second half. Aaron Poole scored the other two goals, one on a penalty kick at the 29:13 mark, and a second about nine minutes later.

EJ splits at jamboree

PORTLAND — The East Jay eighth grade football team split its contests as it opened the 2004 season at its jamboree Wednesday, topping Richmond Dennis 8-6 while losing by the same score to Hartford City.

Lance Franklin scored on a 50-yard touchdown run in the victory over Richmond. Billy Wellman ran in for the 2-point conversion.

Wellman also had the lone touchdown against Hartford City on a 5-yard run.[[In-content Ad]]
