Patriot golfers stay perfect with win over Stars (05/14/04)

Jay County Roundup

The Jay County golf team is at its best when it simply plays a consistent round. It did so in a big way Thursday.

The Patriots kept their perfect season in tact with a 156-166 victory over the host South Adams Starfires at Wabash Valley Golf Course.

Jesse Shawver was captain consistency for Jay County. He birdied the 480-yard, par-5 second hole, had bogeys on the first and third and never faltered through the rest of his round.

The senior parred each of the final six holes to close with a 1-over 37.

Tyler Johnston’s par streak was nearly as long as he dropped in pars on each of the final five holes en route to a 39. Alex Hunt birdied No. 2 and had pars on one, seven, eight and nine to also finish with a 39.

Adam Foster had a five-par round for a 40 to round out the varsity score, and Nathan McClung and a birdie and three pars on the way to a 42.

Ben Zurcher had the low round for South Adams, matching Shawver with a 37.

The Patriots will try for a conference title when they play in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament Monday at LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington.

The Jay County junior varsity team also topped South Adams Thursday by a 189-201 score.

Juniors Josh Thornburg and Ben Freeman paced the team with scores of 44 and 45 respectively. Gray Suman came in with a 49, and Adam Arnold and James Brosher finished with matching 51s.

Jay softball ends skid

As rough as Wednesday’s 11-1 loss to South Adams was, it may have been just what the Jay County softball team needed. It had a long practice after its sixth straight defeat, and came out refocused Thursday.

The result was an outstanding outing by the host Patriots as they handed the Anderson Indians just their fourth loss of the season by a 1-0 score.

The game was a scoreless tie through the first six innings, and Brittany Logue tossed another shutout inning for Jay County in the seventh. Jenni Chittum followed by leading off the bottom of the final frame with a walk, and she advanced to second on a passed ball.

Katie Alberson pushed her to third with a ground out for the second out of the inning. But, Anderson (14-4) would never record the third out it needed as Ashleigh Myers lined a single to center field to bring Chittum to the plate with the winning run.

Myers finished with two of Jay County’s three hits. Erica Murray had the other hit.

Logue also limited the Indians to three hits as the Patriots finally surpassed last season’s win total to improve to 7-14. She tossed her seven scoreless innings with one strikeout and three walks.

The Patriots will visit Wes-Del Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Jay County’s junior varsity softball team also picked up a one-run win, defeating host Adams Central 10-9 Thursday.

Betsy Jarret paced the offense with three hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Jennifer Logue had a pair of hits, including a triple, one run and one RBI.

Morgan Locke doubled and scored twice, Shae Keller had three runs and three RBIs and Erica Clark added a single, two runs and two RBIs.

Locke also picked up the victory, allowing nine runs on nine hits in seven innings. She struck out five and walked 10.
