Patriot golfers take tiebreaker (05/26/06)

JCHS boys golf

GENEVA — That fifth score really can make a difference.

In high school golf each team uses five players, but only the top four scores count — except in case of a tie. That was what happened Thursday when Chris Shannon’s 52 bettered Thurman Pursley’s 57 to break a tie at 178 and give Jay County the win over the South Adams Starfires.

Shannon bounced back after scoring a 10 on the 505-yard, par-5 10th hole. He had nothing worse than a double-bogey the rest of the way for his tie-breaking total.

Adam Gray posted the top score for the Patriots as he opened his round with three pars on the back nine at Wabash Valley Golf Club. He added two more on the 15th and 17th holes for a 40.

Brett Zurcher of South Adams had five pars and a pair of birdies to earn match medalist honors with a 39.

Gray Suman followed Gray for Jay County, getting pars on three of the first four holes for a 43. James Brosher had a 47, and Josh Hall added a 48.[[In-content Ad]]
