Patriot grapplers finish third at Super Duals (11/22/04)

NEW CASTLE — The Jay County wrestling team lost its first match of the season. It didn’t do much losing after that this weekend.

The Patriots opened with a loss to Westfield, but won five of their next six matches to finish in third place at the New Castle Super Duals Friday and Saturday.

Jay County’s 5-2 mark put it behind champion Westfield and the second-place host Trojans, who it lost two in the second round.

Junior Kurtis Hess was perfect at the two-day event. He finished 6-0 in the 140-pound weight class.

Micah Enyart (145), Bill Spahr (171) and Nathan Conatser (215) all finished 6-1, and Robert Ralston (160) was 5-1. Spahr had the team’s fastest pin of the tournament, topping his opponent from Columbus East in just 14 seconds.

Rodney Cassell was 4-2 at 189 pounds, and Devon Huftel added a 4-3 mark at 152. Kade Poore won the only match he wrestled at 135 pounds.

Jay County will visit Muncie Southside Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Rollers remain perfect

BERNE — Four matches, four wins.

The Jay County High Rollers boys bowling team stayed undefeated on the season Saturday with a 15-5 thrashing of Southern Wells at Haworth Lanes. The girls team lost to Marion 13-7, and the junior varsity team fell by a 16-4 score to Bellmont.

The High Rollers dominated each of the two games, winning by scores of 888-768 and 1,041-886.

Andy Hughes paced Jay County with a 379 series, and Cory Mock followed with a 353. Evan Eley rolled a 258 in his only game.

The girls team (2-2) trailed 6-4 after losing the first game 831-703. It dropped the second game 967-804.

The junior varsity squad managed just two points in each game. Ryan Mescher paced the JV group with a 389 series which included a 206 game, and Coty Bragg added a 336.

Jay County will return to action Wednesday at Decatur at 4:30 p.m. The two varsity squads will battle Marion while the JV goes up against Bluffton.

SA cagers fall again

UNION CITY — The South Adams girls basketball team is still looking for its first win after a 54-42 loss to the Union City Indians Saturday.

The Starfires trailed just 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. But, they allowed 25 second-quarter points to fall behind by 11 and never recovered.

Kindle Inniger paced South Adams (0-3) in scoring for the third straight game as she finished with 13 points. She also had four steals, three rebounds and one assist.

Alyssa Miller was the only other Starfire in double figures as she scored 10 points. Erin McCollum added five points.

Julie Muhlenkamp and Brooke Fox each grabbed four rebounds as South Adams was outdone on the glass by a 29-16 margin. Muhlenkamp also had a pair of blocks.

The Starfires will try for their first win again Friday when they visit Bluffton a 6 p.m.

Bailey plays in showcase

Jay County senior Trent Bailey competed in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association College Showcase this weekend in Indianapolis.

Bailey was one of 16 players to be selected from District 2 by a panel of high school coaches. He is the first Patriot to be chosen since Joe Sheward in 1998.

Fort tickets

Tickets to Fort Recovery’s season-opening boys basketball game at home Friday against Kalida will go on sale Monday.

They will be sold in the high school office Monday from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. They will also be sold in the middle school office Tuesday from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

Advance tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults. All tickets at the door will be $5.
