Patriot netters defeat Starfires

JCHS-SAHS tennis

For the fourth straight season the girls tennis match between Jay County and South Adams high schools was decided by a 3-2 score. Finally, the Patriots were on top.

JCHS got a three-set win from Emily Huntsman and Becky Muhlenkamp to knock off the visiting Starfires.

The match came down to a back-and-fourth third set at No. 2 doubles. Huntsman and Muhlenkamp had a 2-1 lead in the deciding set against Julia Schmidt and Rebekah Steiner, but fell behind 3-2. They broke South Adams' serve to pull back ahead and take a 5-3 lead.

Schmidt and Steiner got back to within 5-4, but Huntsman and Muhlenkamp earned a triple match point as they led 40-love in the 10th game. However, Schmidt and Steiner fought off all three to even the score at deuce.

Despite the missed opportunity, the Patriots bounced back to win the game, set and match when SAHS knocked a Huntsman shot back into the net.

Muhlenkamp and Huntsman's rallied from a first-set defeat to a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win pushing Jay County to .500 on the year at 3-3.

The Patriots took the No. 1 doubles match as well, with Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman dominating the second set.

After a tight first set, they took the first five games of the second over Tara Beitler and Amber Neuenschwander en route to the 6-4, 6-1 win.

Mariah Clark earned the other JCHS win at No. 3 singles in quick fashion. She swept the first set and rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kyla Potts.

South Adams got the win at No. 1 singles with Tori Kistler defeating Kayla Martin 6-3, 6-2. Jacie Yoder earned the other Starfire win by a 6-1, 6-3 score over Hannah McAbee at No. 2 singles.
