JCHS boys tennis

MARION - The sectional streak ends at three.

Jay County High School's boys tennis team's season came to a close Friday as it lost 5-0 to the Mississinewa Indians in the semifinal round of the sectional tournament at Marion. The Patriots had won the previous three sectionals - Mississinewa won in 2003 and 2004 - and five since 2000.

Chase Wellman forced a third set in his match at No. 3 singles, but the Indians (12-5) were in control everywhere else. After dropping the opening set, Wellman picked up a tiebreaker win in the second before falling 6-1, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4 to Brandon Cragur.

Mississinewa gave up no more than four games in any other match as Phil Powell of JCHS fell 6-3, 6-1 to Cody Everhart at No. 1 singles. Kyle Simmons suffered his first loss since August, 6-1, 6-1 to Adam Drake.

In doubles action, Jared Valentine and Adam Horn dropped 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 1 match to Brandon Schuler and Kenny Cassidy. At No. 2, Sam Miller and Tylor Smith lost 6-1, 6-0 against Evan Yeater and Ryne Cunningham.

The Indians advance to play Marion in today's championship match at 10 a.m.

Simmons' loss halted a 15-match winning streak for the senior as he capped his season at 15-4. Wellman followed with an 11-8 record, Powell finished 9-9, Valentine and Horn went 8-11 and Miller and Smith were 3-16.
