JCHS boys tennis
A great season came to a close Friday as Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby lost in the first round of the state finals of the No. 1 tennis doubles championship.
The first tennis players from Jay County to participate in the state finals, as well as holders of the school record for wins in a single season with 22, the pair lost to Terre Haute South 3-6 and 1-6.
The Terre Haute South team had a record of 17-7 coming in.
Jay County jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set, then watched South ratchet the game up a notch.
Rigby and Evans played many games to deuce but couldn’t come up with the big points at the right time.
At 3-5 in the first set, the game went to 14 points before being decided when Terre Haute hit a winner down the line to get to set point.
Then an error by the Patriots gave the first set to Terre Haute. In the second set, Terre Haute won the opening game before Rigby held serve for Jay and knotted the score at one-all.
Down 1-4 in the second set, Jay forced the seventh game to extended points before finally falling on Rigby’s serve. Terre Haute then offered up a great service game in four straight points to win the match.[[In-content Ad]]
