Jay County’s track teams did well on Senior Night, with the boys team defeating Muncie Central 67-56 while the girls team took a 68-50 win.

Adam Grile got three wins to lead the boys team by taking the 110-meter hurdles in 17.27, the 300-meter hurdles in 45.81 and the high jump at five feet, six inches. Lucas McBride won the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.85, and he also won the long jump at 19 feet, five inches.

David Stith led a sweep of the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, and Steven Castillo led a sweep of the discus with a launch of 135 feet, five inches.

Grile, McBride, Castillo and Alex Loucks teamed to win the 400-meter relay in 46.55

The girls team swept the 200-meter dash, the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run as Alyssa Johnson returned to action to team with Nicole VanSkyock.

VanSkyock was first in the 800-meter run in 2:35.78 and led the sweep of the 1600 in a time of 5:412, with Johnson placing second. Johnson. Johnson was first in the 3200 with a time of 13:01.50.

Jamie Bruggeman won the 200 in 29.28 to lead that sweep, and Kristina Link added a win in the shot put at 38 feet.

VanSkyock, Jill Roughia, Megan Franks and Amber Golden teamed to win the 3200-meter relay in 11:06.

Jay County will run in the Olympic Athletic Conference championships Friday.

Jay County tops Shenandoah

The Patriot tennis team pulled within one victory of the .500 mark Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Shenandoah.

Jay County took the victory on the power of three singles victories, with Kristen Klatt leading the way with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mary Saunders at No. 1 singles. Kelly Hess topped Whitney Barker at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-0, and Chelsea Reff won her battle at No. 3 singles against Rachelle Kemerly, 6-4, 6-2.

In varsity doubles matches, Julie Sours at Erin St. Myers fell to Emily Grag and Kayla Ballard 6-2, 6-4, and Erin Schmiesing and Whitney Schemenaur dropped a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6) decision to Morgan Lawson and Abbi Becker.

Jay County’s junior varsity team also defeated Shenandoah Tuesday, 4-2.

Amanda Hicks scored an 8-4 win over Nicole Brown at No. 1 singles, Jessica DeRome defeated Lyndsey Kokena 8-4 at No. 3 singles and Jenae Horn beat Jessica Parish 8-4 at No. 4 singles.

Brianne Morrical and Stephanie Homan scored Jay County’s lone doubles win, taking an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles over Taryn Weber and Krystal Harrison.

Angie Stults lost to Brittanie Middleton 8-2 at No. 2 singles, and the team of Brittany Pinkerton and Niki Guntle fell to Middleton and Weber 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

The Patriots play at home Thursday against Richmond at 4:30 p.m.

Patriots lose lead

The Jay County softball team had a 3-1 lead on the third-ranked team in the state, but couldn’t hold on. The Patriots allowed 13 runs in the final three innings in a 14-4 loss to the Class 2A No. 3 Blackford Bruins Tuesday.

The Patriots (5-17) gave up one run in the first inning, but scored once in the second and twice in the fourth to forge a 3-1 lead. The teams traded runs in the fifth inning before Blackford scored five times in the sixth and seven in the seventh to turn the game into a blowout.

Ashleigh Myers took the loss in relief of Ashley Cook, allowing nine runs — two earned — in three innings. Cook gave up two runs — four earned in four innings as she allowed three hits.

The Patriots two hits, one run and one RBI from Katie Alberson to lead the way. Calah Redwine had a single, two RBIs and a run.

Stephanie Imel had two hits and a run, and Myers singled and scored once.

Jay County returns to play today at South Adams at 4:30 p.m.

The drawing for the state softball tournament was also held today.

Jay County will play in the second first-round game at Pendleton Heights Tuesday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. against Muncie Southside. Muncie Central and Richmond will play in the opening game at 5 p.m.

New Castle will meet Anderson in the first game Wednesday, May 28 at 5 p.m., and Pendleton Heights will play Anderson Highland at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of Tuesday’s games will meet Thursday, May 29 at 5 p.m., with the winners of Wednesday’s games playing at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will be Friday, May 30 at 5 p.m.

The Patriots split their season series with Muncie Southside this year. They lost the first game 2-1, and won the second 10-8.

Jay falls to Bruins

Jay County’s junior varsity softball team took a 16-6 loss against Blackford Tuesday.

Andrea Current and Paige Hummel each had a pair of hits for the Patriots. Miranda Betz, Brittany Logue and Lisa Weitzel each added one.

Logue took the loss, striking out five and walking two.[[In-content Ad]]
