Patriot soccer rallies in 2nd half (08/31/07)

OSSIAN - Make it three.

Jay County High School's boys soccer team won its third match in a row Thursday, rallying past the host Norwell Knights 3-1. The Patriots had a tie and a loss in its first two games, but are now 3-1-1 on the year.

JCHS trailed 1-0 at the half against the Knights, but rallied after the intermission. The Patriots got their first score from Isaac Poole on an assist from Patrick Johnson.

Justen Moser, who scored the game-winner against Delta a week ago, did the same to Norwell to give Jay County a 2-1 lead. Another Johnson assist led to Brad Horn's second goal of the year for the final margin.

The Patriots finished with 10 shots on goal compared to five for Norwell, and Kevin Dirksen came up with four saves.

The Knights won the junior varsity game over Jay County, 5-0.

No. 8 Raiders top spikers

SELMA - The Patriot volleyball team pushed the eighth-ranked squad in the state, but couldn't pull out a game. Jay County narrowly lost each of the first two in a 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 defeat Thursday at the hands of the Class 2A No. 8 Wapahani Raiders.

Chelsea Grady had 15 digs and eight points, both team highs, in the loss, which dropped the Patriots to 8-4. Sarah Mescher added six points and three kills.

Shelby Rines matched Grady with 15 digs, Sharon Dirksen had 12 assists and Sarah Westgerdes totaled four kills.

Ashley Langenkamp racked up team bests of nine points, nine assists and eight digs to lead Jay County's junior varsity team (7-2) to a 19-25, 25-22, 15-11 win over the Raiders. She also had three kills and one block.

Amy Alig and Kelsey Wood each had seven kills, and Liz Walker added seven digs.

Eagle 8th wins in two

BERNE - West Jay Middle School's eighth grade volleyball team eked out a pair of close games Thursday night for a 25-22, 25-24 victory over South Adams. The Starfires won the seventh grade match, 25-14, 25-14.

Megan Sawyer led the victory for the Eagle eighth graders with nine points, seven of which came in the opening game. Shelbi Louck and Shannon Springer each had five points.

Shelby Shirk scored five points for the seventh grade team, and Mikayla Martin had three points.[[In-content Ad]]
