Patriot softball shuts out Tigers (05/04/06)

BLUFFTON — Two runs were all the Patriots needed.

Shae Keller tossed a two-hit shutout Wednesday as the Jay County softball team defeated the Bluffton Tigers 2-0. It was the sixth win in seven games for the Patriots, who are now 10-8.

Keller struck out five batters as she ran her record to 8-6. She allowed just two walks to go along with the two hits.

Trisha Champ and Keller led the offense, each finishing with a pair of hits. Keller and Amber Champ each scored a run, and Trisha Champ had an RBI.

Danielle Jackson had the only other hit for the Patriots.

WJ girls top Salamonie

DUNKIRK — Kyli Kelso and Anneliese Jetmore combined for five of their squad’s six individual victories as the West Jay Middle School girls track team defeated Salamonie 55.5-45.5 Wednesday.

Kelso took first place in both sprints, winning the 100-meter dash in 14.44 seconds and the 200 in 30.91. She was also first in the long jump at 12 feet, five inches.

Jetmore finished the 1,600 run in six-minutes, 21 seconds for the victory. She cleared the high jump bar at a winning height of four feet, three inches.

The other individual Eagle victory came from Megan Roush, who took the hurdles in 21.09.

Kelso, Macey Gerber, Mallory Levasseur and Ashley Franklin won the 4x100 relay.

Eagle boys place 5th

PONETO — West Jay’s boys track team placed fifth as it competed in the sixth-team Southern Wells Relays Tuesday.

Chris Mooney had the top effort for the Eagles, finishing second in the discus at 108 feet. He was also third in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, six inches, and Taylor Thompson took third in the 200-meter dash.

The West Jay team of Dylan Huey, Michael Daniels, Greg Young and Chase Louck took third in the 4x200 relay.

Litmer, Twigg hit aces

Portland Golf Club was host to a pair of holes-in-one recently.

Tom Litmer hit his ace with a 7-iron on the 176-yard, par-3 second hole at PGC. It was witnessed by Gene Eckstein, Warner Prenger and Ron Buschur.

Fred Twigg also used a 7-iron for his second career hole-in-one on the 129-yard, par-3 eighth hole. His shot was witnessed by Jerry Funk and Bill Money.[[In-content Ad]]
