Patriot tankers take first

CONNERSVILLE — With a perfect 7-0 record in dual meets, the Jay County High School girls swim team can add a tournament win to its list of accomplishments.
The Patriots swam to victory at the Connersville Invitational on Saturday with a team score of 331.
The host Spartans placed second with 259, and New Castle was third with 231.5.
For the boys, Jay County placed second with 284 points behind Connersville (373) and ahead of New Castle (238).
Sophie Bader and Anne Vormohr were both dual event winners for the Patriot girls. Bader swam to victories in the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Vormohr earned wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Josh Lykins and James Keen both remained undefeated on the season in their individual events. Lykins placed first in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Keen won both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
The Patriot girls and boys relay teams both placed first in the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays.


Jay grapplers fifth
MONTICELLO — The Jay County wrestling team had 13 members place in the top eight at the Twin Lakes Invitational on Saturday, as the Patriots earned 161 points for a fifth-place finish.
Peru won the tournament with 231 points, Lewis Cass was second with 184.5 and host Twin Lakes was third with 179.5 points.
Senior heavyweight Eric Hemmelgarn won his second straight title at the invitational, pinning South Bend Riley’s Brian Shaw in 1 minute, 13 seconds. His 4-0 performance for the tournament pushed his record to 17-0 on the season.
Earning fourth-place finishes for the Patriots were Alex Abbott (113), Tristan Atkins (120), Conner Ray (126) and Jesse Finnerty (152).
Placing sixth were Dallas Dudelston (132), Andy Kohler (170) and Chris Pfeifer (220).
Jacob Geesaman (106), Tyler Leonhard (145), Levi Hummel (160) and Cory Robertson (220) earned seventh place finishes for the Patriots, and Andrew McShane (138) placed eighth.[[In-content Ad]]
