MARION — Jay County is one win away from a fifth straight sectional championship berth.
The Patriot girls tennis team rolled past the Blackford Bruins 4-1 Thursday in the opening round of sectional play at Marion. They will meet the Mississinewa Indians in semifinal action today at Matter Park in Marion at 4:30 p.m.
The No. 2s set the pace for Jay County, which won the sectional crown in 2001 but has lost each of the last three title matches to Marion. The host Giants, who play Madison-Grant in today’s other semifinal, have won 12 of the last 13 sectional championships.
Erin St. Myers improved to 12-3 on the year at No. 2 singles against Jennifer Uggen. She cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Carissa Wilkins and Stephanie Homan also won relatively easily at No. 2 doubles. They knocked off Danyelle Worster and Samantha Rhoton 6-1, 6-0.
Jay County, which defeated Blackford 3-2 in the season opener this year, clinched the team victory as Julie Sours knocked off Alethia Castillo 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Chelsea Reff and Brianne Morrical also earned a victory, topping Trudy Valentine and Kathryn Ehrhart 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Whitney Schemenaur took the lone Patriot loss of the night, falling to Brittany Fancher 6-4, 6-4.
The championship match will be Saturday at Marion at 10 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
