Patriot track destroys Tribe

The Mississinewa Indians were no match for the Jay County High School track teams Monday.

The Patriot girls won every event, taking two of the top three spots in all of them and sweeping four in a 105-18 victory. The boys team turned in two sweeps and three other one-two finishes as they rolled over visiting Mississinewa 75-47.

Jordan McMillan led the overall Jay County dominance with three victories, leading a one-two finish in the 100-meter dash. She finished the race in 13.2 seconds, four tenths ahead of freshman teammate Katie Snyder.

McMillan, a junior, also finished first in the high jump at 5 feet, 1 inch and the long jump at 14 feet, 5 ½ inches. She teamed with Sierra Weatherhead, Kelsey Wood and Snyder to win the 4x100 relay in 54.4.

Senior Kari Hemmelgarn set the pace in a JCHS sweep of the 1,600 run in 6 minutes, 9.2 seconds with teammates Leah Wellman and Eme Miller finishing in two and four tenths behind her. She was also first in the 800 run by just six tenths of a second in 2:39.6.

Hemmelgarn, Wellman, Miller and Liz Lennartz won the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:01.9.

Maria Murphy kept her perfect record in tact in the throwing events, turning in a career-best throw of 110 feet, 10 inches in the discus to finish ahead of teammates Abby Denney and Michaela Long. She was first in the shot put by more than four feet at 33 feet, 11 ½ inches.

Tevan Nichols, Zach Cash and Patrick Williams all turned in a pair of victories to lead the boys team.

Nichols led a one-two finish with Dylan Cope in the 1,600 run in 4:57, and took the 800 run in 2:08. Williams took first place in the 100 dash in 11.7 ahead of Blake Crouch, and was first in the shot put at 39 feet, 3 inches. And Cash swept the hurdles, winning the 110 in 16.9 and the 300 in 43.9 with Joe Imel as the runner-up.

Brad Leuthold, Nichols, Johnson and Cope posted a winning time of 8:59 in the 4x800 relay.

The Patriot girls (8-1) swept both hurdle events, with Morgan Link first in the 100 in 19.3 ahead of Megan Taylor and Kim Braun. Taylor posted a winning time of 53.6 in the 300 hurdles with Braun second and Link third.

Macey Gerber stayed perfect in the 400 dash, winning in 1:06.8, one second ahead of teammate Julie Valentine. Katie Simmons was first in the 3,200 run in 13:01 with Aly Miller second, and Snyder took the 200 dash in 28.3.

Valentine, Long, Andrea Bruggeman and Stephanie Hudson took the 4x400 relay in 4:58.1.

Other victories for the boys team (2-7) came from Taylor Hatzell in the discus with a toss of 103 feet, 10 inches and Cope in the 3,200 run at 11:24.

Middle school

PARKER CITY - West Jay's boys team picked up a 56-44 victory Monday over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.

Sean Winget led the Eagles to victory, taking first place in the 100 dash and 200 dash. He also teamed with James Williams, Dan Walter and Andrew Eley to win the 4x100 relay.

Nate Brackman completed a sweep of the sprints by winning the 400 dash, and Dustin Smith was first in the 110 hurdles. Eley won the shot put, and Williams took first in the long jump.[[In-content Ad]]
