FRANKLIN - The Jay County High School volleyball team dropped all three matches Saturday - two in three games - at the Franklin Community Invitational.
All three matches were close, with the Patriots falling 25-22, 25-22 to Olympic Athletic Conference rival Connersville in the opener. They followed with losses of 19-25, 25-13, 25-20 to the host Grizzly Cubs and 25-20, 19-25, 25-20 against Greenfield-Central.
Shelby Rines and Sarah Mescher, both seniors, led Jay County (11-11) on the day. Mescher racked up a team-high 21 points along with 16 digs and 12 kills, and Rines was second on the team in kills (17), digs (17 and points (14).
Chelsea Grady paced the defense with 25 digs, and Sarah Westgerdes powered the attack with 20 kills.
Sharon Dirksen put up 56 assists, and Kristi Morningstar finished with 14 points, including four aces.
Jay County's next action will come Thursday as it hosts its Cancer Benefit Match against Wes-Del.
Flyers smash Tribe
FORT RECOVERY - The Marion Local Flyers were in control throughout Saturday as they handed the Fort Recovery freshman volleyball team a 25-4, 25-10 defeat.
Kendra Brunswick finished the match with six assists, two points and one block, all team highs, for the Indians (5-4). She also had a kill.
Shelby Brunswick added three kills, a block and a dig, and Barbie Link scored two points.
Indians drop JV game
FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery junior varsity football team lost 14-0 Saturday to the Versailles Tigers. The Tribe is now 1-3 on the season.
EJ seventh cruises
HUNTINGTON - East Jay Middle School's seventh grade football team rolled to 3-0 on the season with a 30-8 victory over Huntington Riverview. The eighth graders lost a heartbreaker, 26-24 in double overtime.
Richie Keen's blocked punt and Cody Bellis' ensuing 40-yard return capped the scoring for the seventh grade Chiefs, who were up 30-0 before Huntington got on the board in the final two minutes. Daniel Walter scored on a 20-yard pass from Brock McFarland, and Cade Price and Kaleb Clark had TD runs of 30 and 5 yards respectively.
The East Jay eighth graders (1-2) held a 12-6 lead throughout most of the second half before a roughing the passer call kept Huntington's last drive alive and the home team scored to tie the game with 40 seconds left. Both teams scored on their two overtime possessions, but the Chiefs' two-point conversion attempt after Matt Taylor's 2-yard TD run in the second OT came up short.
Julian Myers had a huge day in the defeat with a 100-yard interception return, a 70-yard touchdown reception from Chandler Stout and a 5-yard TD run in the first overtime.[[In-content Ad]]
