Local Roundup

No one in the Olympic Athletic Conference had the guns to compete with host Connersville Monday, and Jay County slipped to fourth place.

The Patriots scored a 350 in the OAC golf championship, well behind the champion Spartans, who had the top four individual scores and finished with a 304. Huntington North was second with 323, Anderson Highland had a 335 and Muncie South was last with a 413.

Tyler Johnston was the top Jay County golfer, finishing eighth. He was one stroke away from earning all conference honors with an 81.

No. 13 Eagles top JC

The Delta Eagles continued another successful tennis season Monday with a 5-0 win over Jay County. They are now 12-3, and were ranked 13th in the most recent state poll.

The Patriots (6-7) were close in one of the five varsity matches as Daniela Harringer battled Jessica Thomas at No. 1 singles. Harringer fought through the first set, but suffered a 7-5 defeat and couldn’t recover.

She was blanked in the second set in a 7-5, 6-0 defeat.

Julie Sours and Erin St. Myers fell to Tricia Gorenc and Laura Yadon at No. 1 doubles and Chelsea Reff and Erin Schmiesing lost to Blair Buchanan and Kaci Groninger at No. 2 doubles by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1.

Jay County’s junior varsity team was also blanked in a 7-0 defeated.

Amanda Hicks grabbed two games from Kristi Wright at No. 2 singles in an 8-2 defeat, but that was as close as any of the JV players would come. Whitney Schemenaur, Angie Stults and Jessica DeRome each dropped 8-0 decisions to Katie Bryan, Victoria Brewer and Lindsay Coffer respectively.

The doubles teams of Stephanie Homan and Brianne Morrical, Brittany Pinkerton and Niki Guntle and Shonda Sutton and Jenae Horn all lost their matches by 8-1 margins. The JV team finished the year at 7-5.
