Patriots are 2nd in OAC (10/06/2008)

JCHS volleyball

MUNCIE - The Patriots dropped their first match Saturday, but came back for a runner-up finsh at the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament.

Jay County High School's volleyball team bounced back from an opening loss to champion Connersville to defeat Anderson Highland and Muncie Southside to finish in second place. Highland was third, and the host Rebels finished fourth.

Kelsey Wood powered the Patriots (13-14) on the weekend, finishing with a team-high 14 points to go along with 11 kills and 11 digs. She had nine points in the victory over Highland.

Sarah Westgerdes totaled nine kills against Southside and finished the day with 23. Chelsea Grady had 10 of her 22 digs in the win over Highland.

Kristi Morningstar put up 17 assists, and Laura Castillo totaled 14 points.

Junior varsity

The Patriots went 1-2 in the OAC despite going to three games in every match, picking up their lone win 23-25, 25-15, 15-8 over Highland. They lost 25-24, 16-25, 15-13 to Connersville and 25-24, 20-25, 15-14 to Southside.

Taylor Burris racked up an impressive 20 aces as she led Jay County with 34 points. She had 12 points and seven aces in the win over Highland.

Tanner Martin had 55 assists and 22 points, and Maria Murphy finished with 25 kills and six blocks. Lacey Randolph had 21 digs, Megan May added 20 digs and Sierra Weatherhead totaled 15 kills.
