It was well worth the wait.
After having its first week of action postponed because of rain and cold temperatures, Jay County released all of its pent-up offensive energy Monday. The Patriots racked up 12 hits to support a two-hit shutout from Michael Jobe as they opened the season with a 13-0, five-inning victory over the Muncie Central Bearcats.
Jay County (1-0) went down one-two-three in the opening inning, but battered Bearcat pitching the rest of the way.
Shortstop Thomas McCowan, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, opened the second inning with a single, Andy Hughes followed with another single and Tony McCowan walked to load the bases. Two batters later Casey Waters delivered an RBI double, the key hit in a four-run inning for the Patriots.
Singles by Thomas McCowan and Waters again led a three-run third, and senior Rhett Retter broke the game wide open with a three-run home run in the fourth.
The offense was more than enough for Jobe, who never allowed a Muncie Central runner past second base. He struck out five batters, including three in the third inning, and sat down the side in order in the fifth to finish the game.
Following Thomas McCowan offensively were Waters, who went 3-for-3 with two runs, and Hughes with one hit, two walks and three runs.[[In-content Ad]]
