And more importantly: Win!
The Jay County High School girls soccer team scored nearly as many goals Monday as it had all season, earning its first victory of the year 5-1 over the Anderson Highland Scots.
All of the scoring came in the opening half as senior Brianne Wellman led the Patriots with two goals and an assist. Kaelee Keller, Loryn Horn and Mallory Poole each added single tallies as JCHS built its four-goal lead.
Lindsay Moser, who had scored in two of the Patriots previous three games, also had an assist.
Wellman racked up 12 shots on goal for Jay County (1-7-1), which had scored just seven times all season and no more than twice in any game. The team had lost seven straight since opening the 2008 campaign with a 2-2 tie against Heritage.
Poole added seven of the Patriots' 36 shots on goal, and Keller and Kayla Phillips each had five.
Mollie May came up with three saves, and LeAnn Horn added one.
EJ spikers go 1-2
MUNCIE - East Jay Middle School's sixth grade volleyball team defeated the host Delta Eagles 25-22, 25-23 Monday. The Chiefs lost a close battle in the seventh grade match 25-23, 25-24 and dropped the eighth grade match 25-17, 25-18.
Jessica Kerrigan powered the East Jay sixth graders with 15 points, which included six aces. Catherine Dunn had six points and three digs, and Emily Westgerdes and Breanne McIntire each added two kills.
Katie Aker, Abby Dunlavy, Ali Inman and Baily Weatherhead each had three digs in the first loss of the season for the seventh grade Chiefs (5-1). Katlin Petro totaled five aces and two kills.
Rachelle Jackson finished with five points and four digs as the EJMS eighth grade team slipped to 4-2, and Hannah Ainsworth had five digs and two kills. Mikayla Wellman scored eight points, and Sam Homan notched four kills.
Chief gridders win
Both East Jay Middle School football teams are 3-0 after victories at home Saturday over Huntington Riverview. The Chief eighth graders got a five-touchdown day from Brock McFarland in their 56-12 victory, and the seventh grade team won 14-6.
McFarland went 4-of-6 passing for 206 yards and two TDs, ran for two TDs and returned a fumble for a score. Ethan Bruggeman caught four passes for 109 yards and two TDs, and Cade Price (85 yards, one TD), Cody Bellis (69 yards, one TD) and Kelab Clark (one TD) led the ground attack. Richie Keen totaled eight tackles and an interception.
Ryan Claytor powered the seventh grade Chiefs with 23 carries for 153 yards and two TDs. Marcus Ford totaled three tackles and two sacks, and Zack Metcalf had five tackles and a sack as the EJMS defense held Riverview scoreless in the second half.
WJ football drops two
DUNKIRK - The West Jay Middle School eighth grade football team suffered its first loss Thursday 24-12 to the Wes-Del Warriors. The seventh graders also fell, 22-0.
Lucas Wiemer scored both touchdowns for the Eagle eighth graders (2-1) on runs of 50 and 60 yards. He also had six tackles, and Travis Callahan and Blake Crouch each made five tackles.
Billy Kimble powered the West Jay seventh grade team (0-3) with 18 carries for 67 yards. Chaz McClain made six tackles.
