Patriots blast four HRs (04/16/08)
JCHS softball
DALEVILLE - From the first inning, the Patriots brought their bats Tuesday night.
The Jay County High School softball team hit four home runs, clobbering the host Daleville Broncos 17-7 in six innings.
Sophomore Lindsey Wellman and senior Amber Edmundson set the tone early. The No. 4 and 5 hitters in the JCHS lineup went back-to-back, with Wellman blasting a three-run home run and Edmundson following with a solo shot.
In the Patriots' eight-run fourth inning Brittney Watson helped her own pitching cause with a three-run homer. Two batters later senior Candace Betz slammed a two-run homer for the first long ball of her career.
Watson finished with two hits, four RBIs and three runs to lead Jay County to its biggest offensive output of the year. Betz had two hits and three RBIs, Edmundson totaled two hits and three runs and Wellman had three RBIs and a pair of runs.
Tiffany Davis and Pazia Speed also had two hits apiece as the Patriots won their third in a row to improve to 6-2.
Davis, Speed, Kayla Phillips and Lauren Edmundson each scored twice.
Watson picked up her second win of the year, giving up seven runs - two earned - on six hits and three walks. She struck out four batters in six innings.
Junior varsity
Jay County scored 12 times in the second and third innings on the way to a 13-0, five-inning win over the visiting Muncie Central Bearcats.
Kendra Younger paced the Patriots, going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Laura Castillo tripled and scored twice, Caitlin Gilbert had a double and two runs and Erika Bruggeman scored two runs.
Selena McKibben picked up the victory, allowing one hit while striking out three in three innings. Younger had two strikeouts in two innings.[[In-content Ad]]
