Patriots blast Starfires by 29 (01/21/04)

Jay County Roundup

A huge second quarter was more than enough for the Jay County girls basketball team to put away South Adams Tuesday.

The Patriots, already leading 14-5, outscored the host Starfires 22-2 in the second period. The onslaught continued in the second half as Jay County grabbed the 70-41 victory.

Felisha Parr didn’t score in the big second quarter, but led a balanced Jay County attack by finishing with 12 points. Sarah Dirksen scored 11 points, and Markie Runyon also finished in double figures with 10.

Jay County also won the junior varsity contest 50-19, doing much of the damage in the second half.

The Patriots led just 20-14 at halftime, but allowed just two third-quarter points and three in the fourth. In all they outscored the Starfires 30-5 after the intermission.

Theresa Reinhart and Miranda Betz shared Patriot scoring honors with 10 points apiece. Whitney Homan, Mary Spencer and Natasha Stout each added five points.

Kayla Coblentz had nine points for South Adams

Jay County’s next game is at Muncie Central Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. The Starfires will visit Woodlan Saturday at 6 p.m.

Jay loses pair

The Patriots had 22 personal- or season-best times on the night in the 98-88 defeat. The boys team managed just one victory in a 138-44 loss.

Lindsey Vesperry continued to perform well for the girls team, picking up another win in the 200-yard freestyle. She was first by more than six seconds with a personal-best time of 2-minutes, 16.89 seconds.

Julie Sours added the only other individual win in swimming as she hit the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke. She edged Jenny Sebura by just over one second in 1:18.06, which was her best time of the season.

Vesperry and Sours also joined Amber Kelly and Rachel McKee to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:53.99.

Sarah Miller added the only other Patriot victory with a 232.35-point total in diving.

Both teams will compete in the Olympic Athletic Conference meet at Jay County Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
