Patriots climb back into top 10 (01/30/07)
Local roundup
INDIANAPOLIS - After two weeks on the outside looking in, the Patriots returned to the state's top 10.
Jay County reclaimed the No. 10 spot in this week's Class 3A boys basketball poll by The Associated Press. It had been 13th in the voting in each of the previous two weeks.
The Patriots (11-3) finished with 53 poll points, seven behind No. 9 Evansville Bosse (11-4) and three ahead of Washington (11-3). Defending state champion New Castle (16-1) continued to control the No. 1 position while Edgewood (14-0) was second.
Back-to-back losses to Centerville and Class 4A No. 3 Muncie Central in December pushed Jay County out of the state rankings. But the team has bounced back with five wins in its last six games, including a current run of four straight. The only loss during the stretch came by a 47-43 score in overtime against Class 3A No. 6 Connersville.
Fort freshmen fall
FORT RECOVERY - Fort Recovery's freshman boys basketball team had trouble slowing down the St. John's Blue Jays Monday in a 56-47 defeat.
The Indians trailed 9-5 after the opening period in the nine-point defeat. But they couldn't overcome St. John's, which scored 16, 13 and 18 points over the final three quarters.
Nate Keller paced the Indians with 16 points.
Craig Tobe also reached double figures with 14 points, and Nate Wendel scored eight.
Tribe seventh victorious
FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery seventh grade boys basketball team used a huge third quarter and great second-half defense for a 36-18 victory Monday over the Greenville Green Wave. The Tribe eighth graders lost 40-33.
The Indian seventh grade squad led by four at the half, but broke the game open with a 17-point third quarter. It also limited the Green Wave to just six second-half points.
Jacob Whitacre led the Tribe to the win with 12 points, and Jared Kahlig scored 10.
Fort Recovery's eighth grade team fell behind by six in the opening quarter and was unable to rally. Craig Fortkamp paced the Indians with 13 points, and John Homan followed with 11.
