Patriots clobber Southside (09/25/07)

Local roundup

After scoring just two goals in its previous three games, the Jay County High School boys soccer team matched that effort in the first five minutes Monday.

Patriot sophomore Brad Horn scored two quick goals and Trey Dunn and Isaac Poole added a pair as well in a 9-2 destruction of the visiting Muncie Southside Rebels.

Horn put Jay County (6-4-4, 2-1 Olympic Athletic Conference) in control in a hurry with his first score less than three minutes into the game. He hit his second goal two minutes later, and Jordan Moser added a tally at the 26:10 mark to push the lead to 3-0.

Justen Moser and Chase Ainsworth each contributed single tallies to go along with those from Dunn and Poole.

The Patriots finished with 14 shots on goal compared to just five for the Rebels. Kevin Dirksen recorded two saves without allowing a score before turning over goalie duties to Adam Daniels and Justen Moser.

Stars crush Union City

BERNE - The Starfires had to be happy with this sectional preview.

South Adams' boys soccer team clobbered the Union City Indians, the team they will play in the opening round of the Blackford sectional, 11-1 Monday night.

Adam McLaughlin racked up two goals and five assists, two of which went to Zack Sharp for the first two goals of the game, despite playing just 40 minutes. Travis Lavy, Tyler Trowbridge, Shawn Osborne, Shane Swygart, Daniel Heckard, Jim Marbach and Brad Abnet also added goals in the big win.

Marcus Hoover had two assists, and Tobi Moser and Tony Sprunger each finished with one.

Union City's only goal came from Tyler Poling with less than a minute left in the game.

Tennis sectional set

If form holds, the sectional showdown will come in the semifinals.

The high school boys tennis sectional draw was held Monday, with Jay County and Mississinewa ending up on the same side of the bracket.

The Patriots (13-2) will open the tournament at Marion Thursday against Madison-Grant at 4:30 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to play Mississinewa (11-2) in Friday's semifinal round at 4:30 p.m.

The other side of the bracket has Blackford taking on the host Giants (6-8) in Friday's other semifinal match. The championship will be played Saturday at 10 a.m.

Jay County defeated Mississinewa 3-2 last season to win its second straight sectional championship and fourth in the last seven years. The Patriots, who have defeated Blackford 4-1 and Marion 3-2 this year, do not play Mississinewa or Madison-Grant during the regular season.
