Patriots complete perfect year (01/25/05)

Jay County Roundup

PORTLAND — They were perfect as eighth graders, so why not stay that way as freshmen?

The Jay County freshman girls basketball team finished an undefeated season Monday with a 41-38 victory over the Kokomo Wildkats.

They finished the season at 9-0.

Many of the players also were together on last year’s East Jay eighth grade team, which posted a 14-0 record.

The Patriots opened up a nice lead in the first quarter, going ahead 12-5 and then pushing the lead to 24-14 at the half. Kokomo rallied with a 14-point third quarter, but Jay County made just enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Dana Horn was the lone Patriot in double figures, scoring 10 points. Abby Loy followed with seven points, and Cassandra Huelskamp added five.

Shelby Rines and Sharon Dirksen shared a team high of four rebounds, and Horn and Huelskamp each came up with two steals.

Ricky Davis (80) won by a 10-3 decision, Zach Somers (85) took a 14-7 victory and Nate Wood (152) tallied a 10-5 win.

Adding junior varsity victories for East Jay were Chandler Stout, Colin Elliott, Dylan Derrickson, Zach Ainsworth and Jake Boyer.
