Patriots defeat Bluffton for fifth straight win (05/23/06)

Local roundup

With the sectional tournament just a week away, the Jay County baseball team is on the right track.

The Patriots won their fifth straight game Monday, topping the visiting Bluffton Tigers 2-0. They are now 13-9 with three more regular-season games before heading to the Class 3A Blackford sectional to play Elwood on Memorial Day at 5 p.m.

Josh Atkinson turned in his second straight outstanding outing, allowing just two hits in a complete-game shutout. He struck out four batters, and has given up just a single earned run in his last 14 innings of work.

Jay County scored both of its runs in the fourth inning after a Josh Ludy single. Billy Wellman entered as a pinch runner and scored on a triple by Michael Jobe. Josh Shatto brought Jobe home with a RBI ground out.

Jobe paced the offense, going 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI.
