Patriots defeat Delta (09/15/04)

JCHS Roundup

MUNCIE — The Jay County girls soccer team took some heartbreaking losses early in the year, and hadn’t won a game outside of the Olympic Athletic Conference. It turned everything around with a sweet win Tuesday.

The Patriots topped Delta 3-2, scoring the first win over the Eagles in the eight-year history of the program.

Jay County (3-3-1) held a 2-0 lead, but Delta scored twice to tie the game with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. Then it was time for a senior to deliver.

With time winding down Jamie Bruggeman burst down the middle of the field for a score. Her goal with 5:31 remaining would stand as the game-winner as the Patriots finally broke through against Delta.

The first half of Tuesday’s game ended in a scoreless tie, but Bruggeman got the scoring started quickly in the second half. She took a pass from Sara Garringer and put the ball in the net less than three minutes after the intermission.

Five minutes later Garringer notched another assist, hitting freshman Abby Loy with a pass which led to her first career goal.

The Eagles scored twice to even the game before Bruggeman gave Jay County the historic win.

Jay County will be in action again today against sectional rival Bellmont at home at 4:30 p.m.

The Patriots are now 5-5 on the season. All of their five victories have come by a 3-2 score.

The doubles teams earned the other two victories, playing what coach Barry Weaver called their best tennis of the season.

Randy Evans and Tyler Rigby rolled to 11-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of Justin Kaole and Alex Lengorfly at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles pair of Adam Arnold and Travis Smith is now 7-6 after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jared Grandlienard and Dustin Garwood.

Kurtis Hess took just his second loss of the season at No. 1 singles in a pair of tiebreakers. He fell to 11-2 with his 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-4) loss to Brandon Barger.

Jeff Sims lost to Ethan Fiechter at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3.

Jay County’s junior varsity team dropped to 3-7 with a 4-3 loss to Bluffton.

Joshua Ludy struggled in the second set, but dominated the other two for a 6-1, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1 victory over Nathan Aschliman at No. 1 singles. Todd McCowan picked up a 9-8 (7-5) win over Ethan Fiechter at No. 4 singles.

The Patriots’ other win came from Jason Crouch and Thomas Shrack at No. 1 doubles as they eked out a 9-8 (7-3) victory.
