Patriots defeat MC and Winchester

PARKER CITY — Each of the Patriots’ previous two matches had been canceled because of rain. They showed no rust in their return to the course.
The Jay County High School boys golf team stayed undefeated Monday as it shot a 173 on the back nine at Hickory Hills Golf Club. The Patriots finished ahead of the host Monroe Central Golden Bears (176) and Winchester Golden Falcons (189) in the three-team event.
Evan Mathias caught fire four holes into his round on the course where he finished as the sectional runner-up last season. He birdied the 280-yard, par-4 13th hole, tallied three straight pars and then birdied the 156-yard, par-3 17th.
Mathias earned medalist honors by three strokes over Monroe Central’s Tanner Thompson and Winchester’s Brandon Morris with a 2-over-par 37.
Mitchel Rigby had one par in his round of 42 for JCHS (3-0). Adam Alfont added one par on the way to a 46, and Zach Fullenkamp finished with a 48.
Austin Wendel posted a 50.

Softball stomps Rebels
MUNCIE — Jay County put an exclamation point on its victory Monday, scoring eight times in the seventh inning of their 12-0 win over the host Southside Rebels.
The Patriots (5-5) scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings before turning the game into a blowout in their final at bat.
Katlin Petro powered Jay County, finishing 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Chloe Steigerwalt added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Chelsea Tighe drove in two runs and Katie Aker and Courtney Finnerty each scored twice.
Abbey Vance picked up her second win of the year, striking out three batters in three scoreless innings. Larissa Boles struck out 10 batters while allowing just one hit in four innings of relief.


AC blanks baseball
The Patriots lost to their future conference rivals, struggling to find any offense Monday in a 4-0 loss to the Class 2A No. 3 Adams Central Flying Jets.
Adams Central (10-0), which plays in the Allen County Athletic Conference, took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. It added three runs in the sixth for the final margin.
Landry Inman suffered the loss, giving up four runs — three earned — on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out four batters.
Keenan James struck out one batter in one scoreless inning of relief for the Patriots, who swept a doubleheader against Winchester on Saturday.
Jay County (4-6) managed just two hits in the defeat with Kyle Selvey and Jason Houston each recording a single.
JV baseball loses
MUNCIE — Jay County’s junior varsity baseball team had its comeback fall short Monday in an 8-7 loss to the host Delta Eagles.
The Patriots fell behind 7-3 as Delta scored four times in the fourth inning.
JCHS fought back with two runs in the fifth inning and one each in the sixth and seventh, but could not complete the comeback.
Chaz Carroll suffered the loss as he allowed eight runs — four earned — on six hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out three batters.
Zach Pryor went 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Kyler Carvel added a single and two runs, and Lucas Hendee had two hits and one run.[[In-content Ad]]
