Patriots defeat Southside again (05/17/06)

JCHS girls tennis

MUNCIE — If only the Patriots could add Muncie Southside to its schedule a few more times.

The Jay County girls tennis team earned its fourth win of the season and third over Southside Tuesday. The matches keep getting closer, but the Patriot girls picked up a pair of three-set victories to take the 3-2 win over the host Rebels.

Both teams had previously scheduled matches canceled, and agreed to play each other for the third time to get some action in before the sectional tournament begins Thursday. They had already played once during the regular season and again in the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament.

Carissa Wilkins sealed Tuesday’s victory in dramatic fashion.

Wilkins split the first two sets with Aubrey Green, then fell behind 4-1 in the third. But she rallied to force a tie-breaker and won the match 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Tiffani Bickel and Cindy Muhlenkamp also went the distance for their victory over Jessica Dickinson and Marisa Beaty. Bickel and Muhlenkamp dropped the first set of the No. 2 doubles match, but dominated the next two for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.

Angie Stults make quick work of Courtney Williams by a 6-2, 6-3 score at No. 1 singles for the other Patriot point. It was her first victory of the season.

At No. 3 singles Megan Adams lost 6-3, 6-4 to Hannah Hollowell. Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle fell 6-1, 6-3 to Jessica Arnold and Kayla Holt at No. 1 doubles.

Jay County will open sectional play Thursday against Madison-Grant at Marion at 4:30 p.m. The Patriots have advanced to the sectional championship match in five consecutive seasons, but their last title came in 2001.

Junior varsity

The Patriots won the only doubles match, but got swept in singles for a 3-1 loss to Southside.

In singles action Heather Ayers lost 8-6 to Wynona Lane, Caitlin Dunn fell 9-7 to Heather Flowers and Hannah McAbee dropped 8-6 to Lane.[[In-content Ad]]
