Patriots' defense stifles Richmond

RICHMOND - Defense holds the key for the Patriots.
Jay County High School's girls basketball team shut down the Richmond Red Devils Tuesday and dominated the first half on the way to a 46-24 victory. It was the seventh time this year the squad has held an opponent to fewer than 20 points.
Pazia Speed totaled 15 points and five assists for the Patriots (14-5), who led 25-10 over Richmond (5-14) at halftime. Mariah Hornaday, Danielle Link and Hannah Ainsworth each added seven points.
Hornaday also grabbed seven boards.
Jay County ranks second in Class 4A in defensive average, allowing just 34 points per game this year. Mishawaka is No. 1 at 33.65.
In the junior varsity game, Mollie May totaled 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Patriots to a 27-24 win. Maria Murphy added five points.
Back leads C team
The Jay County freshman team jumped above .500 with a 35-23 victory over visiting Adams Central.
Tyler Back totaled 17 points for the Patriots, who improved to 6-5. Evan Ryder added eight points.
EJ wrestlers roll
East Jay Middle School's wrestling team totaled eight pins in a 73-11 victory at home Tuesday over Blackford.
Eric Hemmelgarn scored the quick pin of the night for the Chiefs as he won the heavyweight match in just 18 seconds. Mitchell Bruggeman (85), Conner Ray (90), Phillip Fox (95), Will Rowles (100), Levi Hummel (115), Preston Keen (135), Michael Bruggeman (125) and Ryan Claytor-Tinkham (152) all added pins.
Other victories for EJMS (4-2) came from Brentt Lewis (175), Zach Metcalf (145), Luke Rowles (105) and Alex Abbott (80).
The Chiefs also defeated Winchester Driver 54-36 Monday with pins from Abbott, Ray, Metcalf, Hummel, Michael Bruggeman and Will Rowles. Colton Compton, Keen, Hemmelgarn and Luke Rowles also earned victories.

HARTFORD CITY - The East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team allowed just four first-half points Tuesday in a 47-17 triumph over Hartford City. The seventh grade squad fell 31-25.
Katlin Petro totaled 15 points to pace the eighth grade Chiefs, who shut out Hartford City in the first quarter. Abigail Johnson and Abby Dunlavy each added eight points.
Malarie Houck and Catherine Dunn put in eight points apiece for the seventh grade team. Breanne McIntire finished with seven points.[[In-content Ad]]
