With Alysha Miller and Amanda Johnson leading the way, Jay County left little doubt about who was the best team Saturday.

Hosting the Jay County Invitational, the Patriot girls cross country team dominated the open division. JCHS took the top two spots, three of the top four and half of the top eight in rolling to victory with 27 points.

Leo was a distant second in the six-team field with 48 points, and Muncie Central (68) placed third.

Anderson Highland won the boys competition with 40 points, 10 fewer than second-place Muncie Southside. Jay County does not have enough runners for a team score.

In the closed division, St. Henry dominated the boys competition with 34 points and Liberty Christian was second at 63. Northeastern won the girls competition with 37 points, and Randolph Southern was second at 58.

Individual champions in the small-school races were Zach Burns of Cambridge City at 16-minutes, 49 seconds and Marie Lumpkin of Union in 21:29.

Jay County stole the show in the big-school girls race, with Miller and Johnson dominating the rest of the field. Miller won the race in 20:12 and Johnson was just six seconds behind her in second place, and no other runner finished within a minute of the Patriot duo.

Emily Johnson of Leo was third in 21:21 before Patriot freshman Leah Wellman put Jay County firmly in control by placing fourth in 21:29. Leah's junior sister Kylie crossed the finish line in 21:58 for eighth place, and Brittany Burris capped the team score in 14th at 22:34.

Tevan Nichols paced the Patriots in the boys race as he finished 35th at 20:26. Branden Brinton was 40th in 21:08, and Jacob Heitkamp finished in 22:58 for 48th.

Also running for the JCHS girls were Cassie Laux (19th - 22:56) and Katie Butcher (24th - 23:42).
