Patriots draw Elwood (05/17/07)

INDIANAPOLIS - Such is the luck of the draw.

There are a pair of state-ranked teams in the Class 3A baseball sectional at Blackford, and they'll meet in the opening game.

The Class 3A No. 9 Jay County Patriots will play the 10th-ranked Elwood Panthers in the tournament opener Monday, May 28, at 5 p.m.

The Patriots (17-4) and Elwood met in double-header action Saturday, splitting the pair of games. Jay County rolled to an 11-1, six-inning win in the first game, and the Panthers took game two 6-5.

The other opening-round game at Blackford will pit Delta against Mississinewa May 28 at 7:30 p.m.

The winners of those games will return to play each other in semifinal action Friday, June 1, at 5 p.m. The host Bruins and Tipton, each drawing a bye, will play in the second semifinal game June 1 at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, June 2, at 11 a.m.

Against other sectional opponents this year Jay County has scored wins of 7-5 over Blackford and 10-1 over Delta. A scheduled double-header against Mississinewa was canceled because of weather, and Tipton is not on the regular-season schedule.[[In-content Ad]]
