INDIANAPOLIS - Jay County and South Adams both drew the long road.
In the volleyball state tournament draw released Monday, both schools missed out on a first-round bye and will start sectional play Thursday, Oct. 23. The Patriots will take on host Fort Wayne South Side in Class 4A's sectional 6 while the Starfires will battle Bluffton in Class 2A's sectional 38.
Jay County (13-14), which last won a sectional title in 2002, will play the second of two opening-round matches Oct. 23. Marion and Huntington North will play the first match at 6 p.m. with the Patriots and host Archers to follow.
The winners of Thursday's matches will return to play each other Saturday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m. in semifinal action. Homestead and Fort Wayne North Side will meet in the other semifinal match.
The championship match will be Saturday at 6 p.m., and the winner will advance to the Huntington North regional.
The Patriots defeated Fort Wayne South Side in three games during the regular season. Its only other match against a sectional opponent this year was a loss to Marion in the Jay County Invitational.
The tournament draw was favorable for South Adams, which picked up one of its only two wins this year against Bluffton. The teams will meet in the first match of the Class 2A tournament at Adams Central.
The South Adams/Bluffton winner will advance to play Adams Central in the semifinal round. Bishop Luers and Woodlan will meet in the other semifinal match.
The champion will advance to the regional tournament hosted by Bluffton.
The Starfires (2-20) defeated Bluffton in four games for their first win of the year after an 0-12 start. They lost to Adams Central and Woodlan in three games this season.
