Patriots draw Tipton, Stars will meet Harding (02/24/04)

The Jay County boys basketball team will have to take the long road to a second sectional title. But, the Patriots won’t face a team with a winning record unless they reach the championship game.
The South Adams Starfires will need to overcome their long losing streak just to have a chance.
Jay County drew an opening-round game against the Tipton Blue Devils. South Adams, which has lost eight straight, will play in the opening round against Fort Wayne Harding.
The Class 3A Blackford sectional will open Tuesday, March 2, with Jay County (10-8) taking on Tipton (6-12) in the second game at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the Blackford sectional will go on sale at JCHS Thursday at 8 a.m.
The teams did not meet during the regular season.
The other first-round game will pit Elwood (8-10) versus the host Bruins (4-14) Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The winners of those two contests will meet in the first of two semifinal games Friday, March 5 at 6 p.m. Mississinewa (13-5) and Delta (12-6), who own the two best sectional records, drew byes and will play each other in the second semifinal game Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The championship game will be Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m.
Jay County enters the sectional with a 1-1 record against possible opponents. It defeated Blackford 59-52, and lost to Delta 41-40.
In other games between sectional opponents: Delta defeated Elwood 52-46, Mississinewa blasted Elwood 66-42, Elwood overpowered Blackford 83-64, Elwood edged Tipton 77-76 and Blackford topped Mississinewa 62-53.
South Adams will play the first game of the Class 2A Bluffton sectional Tuesday, meeting Harding (9-7) at 6 p.m. The second opening-round game will be Heritage (7-11) versus Adams Central (11-7).
The Starfires have two regular season games remaining this week, but have not won since topping 0-18 New Haven 63-50 on Jan. 3. They did not play Harding this year.
The South Adams/Harding winner will meet the Heritage/Adams Central winner in Friday’s first semifinal game at 6 p.m. The second semifinal contest sends Woodlan (8-9) against No. 6 Bluffton (15-4) at 7:30 p.m.

South Adams will enter the postseason with a 1-3 record against sectional opponenents, the lone win coming by a 42-39 score over Heritage. The Starfires lost to Bluffton 60-38, dropped a 57-45 decision to Adams Central, and fell to Woodlan 53-45.
Bluffton has a perfect record against sectional opponents this year at 4-0. Along with the win over South Adams, it defeated Adams Central 54-53, Woodlan 49-47 and Heritage 67-50.
Adams Central is 3-1, with only the one-point loss to Bluffton tainting their record. It scored a pair of wins over Woodlan 63-61 and 72-53, and topped Heritage 54-52.
