Patriots drop from top 10 (01/17/07)

Jay County took the sixth-ranked team in Class 3A to overtime, but it was not enough to keep them in the AP's top 10.

The Patriot boys basketball team dropped out of the top grouping this week for the first time since the opening week of the regular season. It finished tied for 13th with Gary Roosevelt in this week's voting by The Associated Press with 13 points, one behind Washington.

Defending state champion New Castle (13-1) remained first with 234 points, and Edgewood (10-0) was second with 216.

Jay County, which has been ranked as high as No. 5 this year, lost to Class 3A No. 6 Connersville 47-43 in overtime Friday night. It bounced back for a 59-42 victory over Northeastern Saturday.

There is just one game on the docket for the Patriots this week as they visit Winchester Friday. The Golden Falcons finished 19th in this week's Class 2A voting.

Patriot freshmen fall

SELMA - The Jay County freshman boys basketball team let a fourth-quarter lead slip away and lost 41-39 in overtime Tuesday to the Wapahani Raiders.

The Patriots led by six entering the final period only to have Wapahani outscore them 12-6 to forge a tie at 33 and force overtime. Taylor Farmer scored all of his four points in the extra session, but was the only Jay County player to get on the board.

Josh Beaty led Patriots with 12 points in the defeat. John Pettus added eight.

Tribe teams smack SH

ST. HENRY, Ohio - Fort Recovery's middle school girls basketball teams each scored big wins Tuesday over the St. Henry Redskins.

The Tribe eighth graders shut out St. Henry in the first and third quarters of a 31-3 win. The seventh graders trailed 4-2 after the opening period, but dominated the rest of the way for a 26-14 victory.

The Brunswicks paced the eighth grade victory, with Kendra scoring 13 points while Holly added eight. Michelle Brockman chipped in four points.

Kylie Kahlig matched the entire Redskin squad in the seventh grade game as she put in 14 points. Kelly Nietfeld finished with seven.

EJ grapplers top Delta

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team came up with another victory Tuesday night, defeating the Delta Eagles 59-36.

The Chiefs racked up 10 wins, nine of which came by pin, including four in less than one minute. Matt Seagraves (90) was off the mat in a flash, finishing his match in 16 seconds.

Other quick pins came from Kyle Davidson (120) in 27 seconds, D. J. Teeple (125) in 34 seconds and Austin Bentz (100) in 45 seconds. Brandon Poore (95), Chandler Stout (105), Nick Leonhard (110), Dyllan Derrickson (115) and Nathan Frisch (175) added pins, and Justin Wygant (145) won by an 18-2 decision.

Tanner Schlicter (110) turned in the fastest of East Jay's four junior varsity wins, getting a pin in 22 seconds.

Raiders down WJ girls

DUNKIRK - West Jay Middle School's girls basketball teams struggled to score Tuesday in a couple of losses to the Southern Wells Raiders.

The Eagle eighth graders lost 30-12, and the seventh grade team took a 24-9 defeat.

Megan Sawyer was the top scorer for the West Jay teams, putting up six points for the seventh graders. Megan Roush added two points.

Annie Jetmore and Carly Weaver shared the team high for the eighth grade team with three points apiece.

Delta downs Chiefs

MUNCIE - The Delta Middle School boys basketball teams handed East Jay a pair of losses Tuesday. The Chief seventh graders fell 35-29 to Delta, and the eighth graders had just two players score in a 39-22 defeat.

Dillon Ainsworth had 10 points for the EJMS seventh graders, who dropped to 9-5 on the year. Jordan McBride was right behind him with nine points.

Garrett Krieg racked up 15 points for the eighth grade team (7-6). Aaron Emerick scored seven points.

East Jay 6th dominates

Emily DeVoe had a big night in leading the East Jay Middle School sixth grade girls basketball team to a 38-17 win over Muncie Wilson.

DeVoe racked up 14 points as the Chiefs opened the season with their second straight win. She also had five steals.

Lexie Gierhart added five points, Gabie Cross and Makayla Jobe each grabbed six rebounds and Hannah Ainsworth had five assists.

Hannah Fifer, Krystian Shores, Alesha Cumings and Mia Stolz each had two points in the B team's 33-8 loss.[[In-content Ad]]
