Patriots earn 4th straight victory

A sweep has the Patriots on their longest winning streak of the year.
The Jay County High School softball team has won four straight games thanks to victories of 6-5 and 12-4 Saturday over the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.
Nikka Chaney smacked a home run while going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs in the game-two win for JCHS (12-6). Lexie Gierhart finished a perfect 4-for-4 with three doubles and two runs.
Rachelle Jackson went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run in the opener. Catherine Dunn and Chelsea Tighe each finished with a single, a double and a run.
Jackson earned the game-two win as she allowed four runs — two earned — on seven hits. Chaney struck out six batters while giving up five runs — three earned — on nine hits in game one.

Girls tennis splits
CONNERSVILLE — Jay County split matches against its former Olympic Athletic Conference rivals, topping the Muncie Southside Rebels 5-0 Saturday and falling 4-1 to the Connersville Spartans.
Alyssa  Rigby was the lone double winner of the day for the Patriots. The JCHS No. 1 singles player topped Southside’s Meagan Fields 6-0, 6-1 and rallied to beat Connersville’s Emily Butsch 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Against Southside, Jessica Ooten shut out Kayla Butler at No. 2 singles, and Melinda Penrod topped Macie Johnson 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

Both doubles matches went the distance, with Alicia Degler and Kyla McKibben beating Elizabeth Allison and Jadelyn Reed 6-4, 5-7, 7-4. At No. 2 doubles, Mackenzie McIntire and Brittany Stevens won 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) over Kacie Johnson and Becky Mann.

Baseball drops two
The Patriots slipped back to .500 Saturday as they fell 7-2 and 8-3 to the visiting Northrop Bruins.
Andy Haffner took the game-one loss for Jay County (8-8-1), giving up seven runs — five earned — on nine hits in six innings. Ty Huntsman took the defeat in the second game as he allowed eight runs — five earned — on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Alex Dunn and Landry Inman each had a hit and a run in the second game for the Patriots, who have lost four in a row. Chance Fuller and Selvey each had a hit and a run in the opener.

Nichols takes third
MONTPELIER — Travis Nichols turned in the best finish among local drivers in Saturday’s action at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Nichols, Portland, was third in the Thunder Cars event. Steve Mills, also of Portland, finished eighth.
Portland’s Richard Williams was eighth in the Super Streets race, and Fort Recovery’s Jamie Heiser followed in ninth. Mason Stewart, Portland, took 18th in the UMP Modifieds.[[In-content Ad]]
