Patriots end slump vs. Wes-Del (05/27/03)

It took the Jay County softball team a while to break last year’s season total for wins (five) after tying the mark midway through the year.

After earning their fifth win, the Patriots lost 13 straight contents to slip to 5-22. They finally broke out of the slump Saturday with a 7-4 win over the Wes-Del Warriors.

Still, Jay County may have gotten off the skids just in time. The win over Wes-Del came in the final regular season game, and the Patriots meet the Muncie Southside Rebels in sectional action today at Pendleton Heights.

The Olympic Athletic Conference rivals split their regular season series.

Jay County (6-22) overcame a 2-1 deficit against the Warriors with three runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. Wes-Del scored twice in the top of the seventh, but could not rally.

Calah Redwine had the lone extra-base hit for the Patriots, a triple. She had a pair of RBIs and scored a run.

Felisha Parr had one hit, one RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Stephanie Imel and Ashleigh Myers each had two hits, and Jenni Chittum drove in a pair of runs.

Ashley Cook picked up the win, allowing four runs — one earned — on seven hits. She walked two and struck out one.

FR’s Niekamp 2nd at district

Tyler Niekamp continued a successful season in the high jump, scoring the best finish for the Fort Recovery track teams at the district track met Saturday.

Niekamp placed second in the high jump, and will compete in the regional meet at Piqua Friday. The Fort Recovery school record holder is scheduled to compete at 5 p.m.

Joining Niekamp in regional action will be junior Angie Fortkamp. She earned her spot in the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in the district meet.

Kristi Westgerdes added a trio of top eight finishes for the girls team. She was sixth in the long jump, seventh in the 200-meter dash and eighth in the 100-meter dash.

Tom Roessner placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles, and David Willmann took eighth in the shot put.

Slump over for Jay baseball

The hitting struggles seem to be over for the Jay County baseball team.

The Patriots won their third straight game Monday against the Bluffton Tigers, 9-2. They had fallen to ninth in the state poll after losing three out of four games and slipping to a second-place finish in the Olympic Athletic Conference.

Jay County (19-4) also had wins of 10-0 and 10-9 over the Wabash Apaches Saturday.

Chad Keen had an outstanding day against Bluffton, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. The sophomore also went the distance for the win, allowing two runs — one earned — on four hits.

He walked three and struck out six.

Nick Timmerman, Chris Myers, Trent Bailey and Heath Williams each had a pair of hits for the Patriots. Timmerman scored three times, and Myers added a pair of runs.

Williams had two hits and a trio of RBIs in the 10-0 win over Wabash. Jay County scored seven runs in the third inning of that contest and finished it in five innings.

Keen, Cameron Hummel and Adam Homan each had two his and one RBI in the win.

Mike Smith gave up five hits and one walk while striking out two for the win.

Homan had another huge game in the second win over the Apaches. He went 4-for-5, hit his seventh home run of the year and added four RBIs.

Hummel, Timmerman and Matt Champ each had two hits.

Smith also earned the game-two win in relief despite some struggles. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 11/3 innings as Wabash pulled to within one run.

Josh Jellison came in to preserve the win for him and earn his second save, striking out one batter in2/3 of an inning.

The Patriots will play their Senior Night contest at home today against Monroe Central at 4:30 p.m.

Jay JV 2nd at invite

The Jay County Red junior varsity golf team had an excellent day at the Jay County Junior Varsity Invitational Saturday on the way to a second-place finish with a score of 341.

Noblesville was first at 320, and South Adams was well behind in third with a 375. The Jay County Blue JV team took seventh with a 415.

Leading the charge for Jay County was Ben Freeman, who placed third overall with an 82. He was followed closely by Nathan McClung and Adam Foster, who had 85s to tie for sixth place.

Josh Hall was ninth with an 89, and Jesse Shawver finished with a 91.

Josh Thornburg was the low scorer for the Jay County Blue team with a 94, and Adam Freeman had a 96. Ryan Fritze came in with a 103, James Brosher had a 122, and Bill Spahr shot a 123.[[In-content Ad]]
