Patriots fall in 12, draw the Eagles (05/10/06)

JCHS softball

HARTFORD CITY — The Jay County and Blackford softball teams dueled in a classic Tuesday night with the host Bruins taking a 7-6, 12-inning victory. If the teams are to meet again this year, it’ll happen in the sectional semifinals.

The IHSAA held the tournament draw this morning, with Jay County lining up against Delta in the first round and Blackford meeting Mississinewa.

The Patriots (11-11) trailed 5-2 heading into the final inning Tuesday, but scored three times in the top of the seventh to force extra frames. Both teams were scoreless through the 11th in Tuesday’s battle, and Jay County scored once in the top of the 12th for a 6-5 lead.

But the Bruins (12-8) tied the game in their half of the 12th, then took the win on an RBI single from Lyndsey Osborn.

Shae Keller went the distance in taking the tough loss, allowing seven runs — four earned — on 11 hits. She struck out four batters and walked three.

Trisha Champ notched three hits, two runs and an RBI to lead the offense. Morgan Locke added two hits and two RBIs.

Erica Murray had three hits, and Shae Keller and Amber Champ each scored twice.

Jay County will meet Delta in the opening game of the Tipton sectional Monday, May 22, at 5 p.m. Blackford and Mississinewa will play in the other first-round game at 7 p.m.

The winners of the opening-round games will play in semifinal action Tuesday, May 23, at 5 p.m. The second semifinal game will pit Elwood against the host Blue Devils at 7 p.m.

The championship game will be Thursday, May 25, at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Bellmont regional.

The Patriots lost 3-2 to Delta in their season opener this year. They defeated Mississinewa 6-3 Thursday.

Jay County does not play Elwood or Tipton during the regular season.

Lauren Edmundson took care of all four Patriot runs. She was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a triple, a run and three RBIs.
